Peter Anderson, "Higher Degree by Research: Factors for Indigenous Student Success "
English | ISBN: 9811951772 | 2022 | 128 pages | EPUB | 266 KB
This open access book provides insights from Indigenous higher degree research (HDR) students on supervision practices in an Australian context. It examines findings from qualitative studies conducted with Indigenous HDR students from different academic disciplines, enrolled higher education institutions across Australia, and supervisors of Indigenous HDR students. Six types of data and their thematic analyses are presented, to understand the needs and experiences of both Indigenous HDR students and supervisors of Indigenous HDR students. This book also unpacks assumptions and commonly held beliefs about Indigenous HDR students, and shares what Indigenous HDRs report they need to experience success in higher education. It reports the experiences of supervisors of Indigenous HDR students, and explore further opportunities which enhance the higher education experiences of Indigenous HDR students. This book also suggests how successful relationships between Indigenous HDR students, and their supervisors may be fostered, and aims to be a useful resource for Indigenous peoples wishing to pursue higher education, and HDR supervisors in countries with Indigenous populations.

Hillbilly Highway: The Transappalachian Migration and the Making of a White Working Class (Politics and Society in Modern America) by Max Fraser
English | September 26, 2023 | ISBN: 0691191115 | 336 pages | PDF | 14 Mb
"The best book to explain the world J. D. Vance came from is Max Fraser's Hillbilly Highway."-Jessica Wilkerson, author of To Live Here, You Have to Fight: How Women Led Appalachian Movements for Social Justice

Over the first two-thirds of the twentieth century, as many as eight million whites left the economically depressed southern countryside and migrated to the booming factory towns and cities of the industrial Midwest in search of work. The "hillbilly highway" was one of the largest internal relocations of poor and working people in American history, yet it has largely escaped close study by historians. In Hillbilly Highway, Max Fraser recovers the long-overlooked story of this massive demographic event and reveals how it has profoundly influenced American history and culture-from the modern industrial labor movement and the postwar urban crisis to the rise of today's white working-class conservatives.
The book draws on a diverse range of sources-from government reports, industry archives, and union records to novels, memoirs, oral histories, and country music-to narrate the distinctive class experience that unfolded across the Transappalachian migration during these critical decades. As the migration became a terrain of both social advancement and marginalization, it knit together white working-class communities across the Upper South and the Midwest-bringing into being a new cultural region that remains a contested battleground in American politics to the present.
The compelling story of an important and neglected chapter in American history, Hillbilly Highway upends conventional wisdom about the enduring political and cultural consequences of the great migration of white southerners in the twentieth century.

Hindu-Christian Dual Belonging
by Daniel J. Soars, Nadya Pohran
English | 2022 | ISBN: 0367647842 | 214 Pages | True ePUB | 2.5 MB

This book focuses on dual belonging within Hindu-Christian contexts. Written by experts in a variety of fields, the chapters explore the theological, philosophical, and cultural anthropological debates relating to religious pluralism, religious language, and social identity while addressing the fact that both Hindu and Christian forms of self-understandings have been significantly moulded through their interactions in South Asia and across certain Euro-American horizons. The limits of the definition of dual belonging are tested via case studies, and contributors address the question of whether there is anything distinctive about dual belonging across Christianity and Hinduism specifically.
A timely contribution to the emerging subject of dual religious belonging, this book will be of interest to academics in the fields of Hindu studies and Christian theology, Hindu-Christian comparative theology, religious pluralism, interreligious relations, the sociology and anthropology of religion, and comparative theology and philosophy.

Alberto Fragio, "Historical Epistemology of Ecological Economics: Essays on the Styles of Economic Reasoning "
English | ISBN: 3030945855 | 2022 | 156 pages | EPUB | 393 KB
This volume uses historical epistemology in order to address several topics in the history of economic thought, with special emphasis on ecological economics, environmental metaphors of scarcity, and mathematical ecology. Using the field of ecological economics as an anchor point, the author reflects on the styles of reasoning in economics with a view towards understanding the nature of disagreement that stems from a failure of communication between rival approaches in economics. A thorough inquiry into issues related to identity, coherence, pluralism, and reception, this volume will appeal to researchers and students interested in history of economic thought, ecological economics, and philosophy of the sciences.

Historical Research, Creative Writing, and the Past: Methods of Knowing
by Kevin A. Morrison, Pälvi Rantala
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1032180889 | 269 Pages | True ePUB | 4.3 MB

Although historical research undertaken in different disciplines often requires speculation and imagination, it remains relatively rare for scholars to foreground these processes explicitly as a knowing method. Historical Research, Creative Writing, and the Past brings together researchers in a wide array of disciplines, including literary studies and history, ethnography, design, film, and sound studies, who employ imagination, creativity, or fiction in their own historical scholarship or who analyze the use of imagination, creativity, or fiction to make historical claims by others. This volume is organized into four topical sections related to representations of the past―textual and conceptual approaches; material and emotional approaches; speculative and experiential approaches; and embodied methodologies―and covers a variety of temporal periods and geographical contexts. Reflecting on the methodological, theoretical, and ethical underpinnings of writing history creatively or speculatively, the essays situate themselves within current debates over epistemology and interdisciplinarity. They yield new insights into historical research methods, including archival investigations and source criticisms, while offering readers tangible examples of how to do history differently.

Jan Záhořík, "Histories of Nationalism beyond Europe: Myths, Elitism and Transnational Connections "
English | ISBN: 3030926753 | 2022 | 180 pages | EPUB | 745 KB
This edited collection explores varying shapes of nationalism in different regional and historical settings in order to analyse the important role that nationalism has played in shaping the contemporary world. Taking a global approach, the collection includes case studies from the Middle East, Africa, Asia and North America. Unique not only in its wide range of geographically diverse case studies, this book is also innovative due to its comparative approach that combines different perspectives on how nations have been understood and how they came into being, highlighting the transnational connections between various countries. The authors examine what is meant by the concepts of 'nation' and 'national identity,' discussing themes such as citizenship, ethnicity, historical symbols and the role of elites. By exploring these entangled categories of nationalism, the authors argue that throughout history, elites have created 'artificial ' versions of nationalism through symbolism and mythology, which has led to nationalism being understood through social constructivist or primordialist lenses. This diverse collection will appeal to researchers studying nationalism, including historians, political scientists and anthropologists.

Juan Jesús Morales Martín, "History of Sociology in Chile: Trajectories, Discontinuities, and Projections "
English | ISBN: 3031104803 | 2022 | 184 pages | EPUB | 419 KB
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the rich and diverse tradition of social thought in Chile over the last century. The authors emphasize the close relationship between sociology and society, and address large issues such as the institutionalization of sociology in the face of an open modernization process following WWII, the key role played by Chile in the regionalization and internationalization of sociology and social sciences in Latin America from the late 1950s until the 1973 Coup d'état, and the radicalization of sociology and the boom of dependency theories during that time. The analysis extends to independent academic centers that kept sociological thought, social intervention and the democratic dream alive within an authoritarian context, and the role of academic and professional sociology since the return to democracy, which has been attentive to accompanying and interpreting the development of a changing Chilean society.

Framed within the country's cultural, economic, historical, social and political experience, this overview of the debates, dissemination, networks, and educational programs associated with sociology, will be of interest to students and scholars of Latin American studies and historical sociology.

Hitmakers: How Brands Influence Culture by Ana Andjelic
English | December 13, 2024 | ISBN: 1032874465 | 220 pages | MOBI | 0.55 Mb
Modern brands are hitmakers. Knowing how to influence consumers through collaborations, merch, entertainment, brand codes, icons and other cultural products (and not through advertising) is a matter of strategy. In this book, world-renowned brand expert, Ana Andjelic, shows how modern brand strategy needs to be redefined as the strategy of cultural influence, how brands today influence culture, how brands should address audiences, and how the new approach to cultural hitmaking works organizationally and operationally.

A cultural hit is an idea, content, or entertainment that a large number of consumers pay attention to, share and talk about. Once cultural hits become market hits, by lifting brand popularity or driving product sales, they have a strong financial return for a company. Brands are motivated to start producing as many cultural hits as possible, and these new formats replace traditional brand marketing strategies.
In the book, Ana Andjelic clearly articulates the complexity of this modern brand building, and provides a set of practical examples and tools that can be used by brand strategists to produce a cultural hit.

Paul Weller, "Hizmet in Transitions: European Developments of a Turkish Muslim-Inspired Movement"
English | ISBN: 3030937976 | 2022 | 274 pages | EPUB | 431 KB
In this open-access monograph, Paul Weller explores how the movement known as Hizmet (meaning "service") is undergoing a period of transitions in Europe. Inspired by the teaching and practice of the Turkish Islamic scholar, Fethullah Gülen, Hizmet has been active in Europe (and other continents) for several decades. It has always been subject to some degree of contestation, which has intensified following the July 2016 coup attempt in Turkey, for which the current Turkish government holds Fethullah Gülen and Hizmet as responsible - a claim they strongly deny. In Turkey, thousands of people associated with Hizmet have been imprisoned. In Europe, pressures have been brought to bear on the movement and its activities. In charting a way forward, Hizmet finds itself in a significant transitional period, the nature and possible future trajectories of which are explored in this volume. The book is informed by a comprehensive literature review and a recent research project which includes primary research interviews with key Hizmet figures in Europe and beyond. It contends that to properly understand Hizmet in Europe, one has to situate it in its interactive engagement both with its diverse European national contexts and with Fethullah Gülen's teaching and practice.

Aaron Bielejewski, "Holding down the Fort: Policing Communities and Community-Oriented Policing in Rural Germany"
English | ISBN: 3658397721 | 2023 | 428 pages | EPUB | 765 KB
This Open-Access-book questions the relationship between institutionalized images and understandings of policing - the monolithic ideas common to most, if not all, Western law enforcement agencies - and contextual, situative, and local interactions where the human representatives of policing - street-level officers - come into contact with residents. The political and theoretical association of specific forms of "Western" policing with democratic society can be illustrated in the case of German integration: narratives of reform and essentially forging new democratic police agencies in the "new German states" stand at odds with much of the experience and statements of officers who continued to serve following (Re)Unification. Officers who present their works primarily in terms of their local responsibilities, expectations and more specifically to their unique and individual relationship and connection to their communities downplay the relevance of high-level policing policy. Based ona two-year ethnographic study of policing in a rural county in the German state of Brandenburg, this book explores the local nature of policing both in terms of how police officers imagine their communities to be and with reference to broader societal expectations and assumptions of what police, essentially, are, can effectively do, and should effectively do.

Hollywood and the Movies of the Fifties: The Collapse of the Studio System, the Thrill of Cinerama, and the Invasion of the Ultimate Body Snatcher-Television by Foster Hirsch
English | October 10, 2023 | ISBN: 0307958922 | 672 pages | MOBI | 53 Mb
A fascinating look at Hollywood's most turbulent decade and the demise of the studio system-set against the boom of the post-World War II years, the Cold War, and the atomic age-and the movies that reflected the seismic shifts

"The definitive book on 1950s Hollywood." -Booklist
"Lavish. . . insightful, rich, expansive, penetrating." -Kirkus
Hollywood in the 1950s was a period when the film industry both set conventions and broke norms and traditions-from Cinerama, CinemaScope, and VistaVision to the epic film and lavish musical. It was a decade that saw the rise of the anti-hero; the smoldering, the hidden, and the unspoken; teenagers gone wild in the streets; the sacred and the profane; the revolution of the Method; the socially conscious; the implosion of the studios; the end of the production code; and the invasion of the ultimate body snatcher: the "small screen" television.
Here is Eisenhower's America-seemingly complacent, conformity-ridden revealed in Vincente Minnelli's Father of the Bride, Walt Disney's Cinderella, and Brigadoon, among others.
And here is its darkening, resonant landscape, beset by conflict, discontent, and anxiety (The Man Who Knew Too Much, The Asphalt Jungle, A Place in the Sun, Touch of Evil, It Came From Outer Space) . . . an America on the verge of cultural, political and sexual revolt, busting up and breaking out (East of Eden, From Here to Eternity, On the Waterfront, Sweet Smell of Success, The Wild One, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Jailhouse Rock).
An important, riveting look at our nation at its peak as a world power and at the political, cultural, sexual upheavals it endured, reflected and explored in the quintessential American art form.

Hollywood Vampires: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, and the Celebrity Exploitation Machine
by Kelly Loudenberg, Makiko Wholey
English | 2025 | ISBN: 0063333813 | 348 Pages | PDF | 1.77 MB

An explosive new book on the infamous trial Depp v. Heard, Hollywood Vampires paints an intimate picture of what was really going on behind the viral headlines between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, with never-before-told stories from their inner circle.
Celebrity romances have always captured the public's imagination, playing out like soap operas seized upon by fans and tabloids alike. By the same token, high-profile trials can take over the mainstream media cycle, with both news pundits and the public picking over every detail to predict outcomes and cast their own judgements. Enter the union, dissolution, and hostile legal battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard-where these dual obsessions collided, creating a chaotic moment of true cultural fixation.
Hollywood Vampires offers an inside account of one of the most controversial and consequential celebrity scandals of the internet era. Fueled by viral clips, reaction videos, and endless online debates, the trial became more than a legal battle. It became a public spectacle, dividing audiences worldwide.
Kelly Loudenberg and Makiko Wholey were journalists on the ground for the Depp v Heard trial. Having closely followed Johnny, Amber, and their camps, they spent the years leading up to and following the trial interviewing the couple's closest allies as well as their managers, lawyers, agents, business associates, publicists, assistants, and personal staff. The result is a page-turning Hollywood epic full of revealing details that tell a wider tale about the celebrity-industrial complex, modern fandom, inflammatory culture wars, and contemporary feminism.
Turning the lens around, Hollywood Vampires questions how the celebrity exploitation machine, strengthened by the forces of social media and legacy media alike, blurs the lines between fact and fiction, comedy and horror. It forces us to ask ourselves why we take celebrity culture so seriously in the first place-and who wins and who loses when Hollywood becomes the vehicle for our own personal and political causes.

David John Dickson, "Holocaust Fiction and the Question of Impiety"
English | ISBN: 303112393X | 2022 | 269 pages | EPUB | 389 KB
This book discusses the issues underlying contemporary Holocaust fiction. Using Gillian Rose's theory of Holocaust piety, it argues that, rather than enhancing our understanding of the Holocaust, contemporary fiction has instead become overly focused on gratuitous representations of bodies in pain. The book begins by discussing the locations and imagery which have come to define our understanding of the Holocaust, before then highlighting how this gradual simplification has led to an increasing sense of emotional distance from the historical past. Holocaust fiction, the book argues, attempts to close this emotional and temporal distance by creating an emotional connection to bodies in pain. Using different concepts relating to embodied experience - from Sonia Kruks' notion of feeling-with to Alison Landsberg's prosthetic memory - the book analyses several key examples of Holocaust literature and film to establish whether fiction still possesses the capacity to approach the Holocaustimpiously.

Lena Englund, "Home and Nation in Anglophone Autobiographies of Africa "
English | ISBN: 3031366352 | 2024 | 222 pages | EPUB | 407 KB
This book looks at contemporary autobiographical works by writers with African backgrounds in relation to the idea of 'place'. It examines eight authors' works - Helen Cooper's The House at Sugar Beach, Sisonke Msimang's Always Another Country, Leila Ahmed's A Border Passage, Noo Saro-Wiwa's Looking for Transwonderland, Douglas Rogers's The Last Resort, Elamin Abdelmahmoud's Son of Elsewhere, Clemantine Wamariya and Elizabeth Weil's The Girl Who Smiled Beads and Aminatta Forna's autobiographical writing - to argue that place is particularly central to personal narrative in texts whose authors have migrated multiple times. Spanning Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Egypt, Rwanda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, this book interrogates the label 'African' writing which has been criticized for ignoring local contexts. It demonstrates how in their works these writers seek to reconnect with a bygone 'Africa', often after complex experiences of political upheavals and personal loss. The chapters also provide in-depth analyses of key concepts related to place and autobiography: place and privilege, place and trauma, and the relationship between place and nation.

Adam J. Goldwyn, "Homer, Humanism, Holocaust: Jewish Responses to the Crisis of Enlightenment During World War II"
English | ISBN: 3031114728 | 2022 | 161 pages | EPUB | 379 KB
This book examines how Jewish intellectuals during and after the Second World War reinterpreted Homer's epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, in light of their own wartime experiences, drawing a parallel between the ancient Greek genocide of the Trojans and the Nazi genocide of the Jews. The wartime writings of Theodore Adorno, Hannah Arendt, Erich Auerbach, Rachel Bespaloff, Hermann Broch, Max Horkheimer, Primo Levi, and others were attempts both to understand the collapse of European civilization and the Enlightenment through critiques of their foundational texts and to imagine the place of the Homeric epics in a new post-War humanism. The book thus also explores the reception of these writers, analyzing how Jewish child-survivors like Geoffrey Hartman and Hélène Cixous and writers of the post-Holocaust generation like Daniel Mendelsohn continued to read the epics as narratives of grief, trauma, and woundedness into the twenty-first century.
