Bayesian Econometric Modelling for Big Data
by Qian, Hang;

English | 2025 | ISBN: 1032915250 | 486 pages | True EPUB | 7 MB

This book delves into scalable Bayesian statistical methods designed to tackle the challenges posed by big data. It explores a variety of divide-and-conquer and subsampling techniques, seamlessly integrating these scalable methods into a broad spectrum of econometric models. In addition to its focus on big data, the book introduces novel concepts within traditional statistics, such as the summation, subtraction, and multiplication of conjugate distributions. These arithmetic operators conceptualize pseudo data in the conjugate prior, sufficient statistics that determine the likelihood, and the posterior as a balance between data and prior information, adding an intriguing dimension to Bayesian analysis. This book also offers a deep dive into Bayesian computation. Given the intricacies of the floating-point representation of real numbers, computer programs can sometimes yield unexpected or theoretically impossible results. Drawing from his experience as a senior statistical software developer, the author shares valuable strategies for designing numerically stable algorithms. The book is an essential resource for a diverse audience: graduate students seeking foundational knowledge in Bayesian econometric models, early-career statisticians eager to explore cutting-edge advancements in scalable Bayesian methods, data analysts struggling with out-of-memory challenges in large datasets, and statistical software users and developers striving to program with efficiency and numerical stability.

Bayesian Meta-Analysis
by Grant, Robert;Di Tanna, Gian Luca;, Di Tanna, Gian Luca

English | 2025 | ISBN: 1032451890 | 328 pages | True EPUB | 9.59 MB

"...this book is extremely timely...not just a technical exposition, but provides practical guidance about using different software platforms, as well as valuable advice about extracting summary statistics, eliciting prior information, communicating results, visualisation, and many other issues...reflects years of thoughtful experience, and should be of huge value to anyone faced with pooling studies into a coherent whole." ~From the Foreword by Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter Meta-analysis is the statistical combination of previously conducted studies, often from summary statistics but sometimes with individual participant data. It is widespread in life sciences and is gaining popularity in economics and beyond. In many real-life meta-analyses, challenges in the source information, such as unreported statistics or biases, can be incorporated using Bayesian methods. Bayesian Meta-Analysis: A Practical Introduction provides an approachable introduction for researchers who are new to Bayes, meta-analysis, or both. There is an emphasis on hands-on learning using a variety of software packages. Key Features Introductory chapters assume no prior experience or mathematical training and are aimed at non-statistical researchers. Examples of basic meta-analyses in seven different software alternatives: BUGS, JAGS, Stan, bayesmeta, brms, Stata, and JASP. Practical advice on extracting information from studies, eliciting expert opinions, managing project decisions, and writing up findings. Discussion of specific problems, including publication bias, unreported statistics, and a mixture of study designs, with code examples. Accompanying online blog and forum, with all code and data from the book, plus more translations to different software. This book aims to bridge the gap between the researcher who wants to carry out tailored meta-analysis and the techniques they need, which have previously been available only in mathematically or computationally demanding publications.

Chemical Thermodynamics: An Introduction
by Freestone, Victor C. M.

English | 2025 | ISBN: 1041001533 | 349 pages | True PDF EPUB | 49.16 MB

Thermodynamics can never be made easy, but with the right approach and a consistent use of scientific terms it can be made less opaque, and it can give a person, who is prepared to try, an insight into how science explains why things happen the way they do. The approach adopted in this book will give readers a better understanding of how science works together with its limitations. Unfortunately, thermodynamics, or at least some parts of it, is a subject which (apart from quantum mechanics) probably causes most confusion and bewilderment amongst scientists. The majority of students do not understand or "get" thermodynamics, and it is considered a "hard" or difficult subject. There are multiple reasons for this. There is of course mathematics, and many thermodynamic texts appear to be lists upon lists of differential equations. Another reason is that thermodynamics is, as often as not, poorly taught by teachers/lecturers who themselves do not understand, or appreciate, or have any interest in the subject (often all three). This results not only in a lack of scientific rigorousness in the teaching of the subject with the resulting confusion, and sometimes teachers, lecturers and authors just get it plain wrong (this occurs surprisingly often). However, it need not be like this and although mathematics (including calculus) is required, it can be kept to a relatively elementary level in order to obtain an understanding of this most important of subjects. No one can pretend that the subject is easy, but it can be made more accessible by a rigorous definition of terms and concepts and ensuring that a consistency of use of these definitions is maintained.
Highlighting the benefits of thermodynamics in practical science, the text gives an intuitive grasp of the major concepts of thermodynamics such as energy and entropy.
Provides a new pedagogic approach to understanding and teaching chemical thermodynamics.
Starting with a set of basic simple assumptions about what constitutes topics such as an ideal gas, theories are developed in a clear, concise and accessible manner that will either answer or at the very least give an insight into a surprising range of scientific phenomena including energy, heat, temperature, properties of gases, time and quantum theory.
Assumes that the reader has essentially no knowledge of the subject.
Mathematics (including calculus) is kept to a relatively elementary level in order to obtain an understanding of this most important of subjects.
Provides the reader with a better understanding of how science works together with its limitations.

Chord Transformations in Higher-Dimensional Networks
by Rafael Cubarsi

English | 2025 | ISBN: 103298290X | 145 pages | True PDF | 9.35 MB

Chord Transformations in Higher-Dimensional Networks proposes an in-depth formal framework for generalized Tonnetze. It takes an algebraic approach and studies systems of k-chords in n-TET scales derived from a given k-mode (array of step intervals) through mode permutations and chord root translations, by combining key ideas of the neo-Riemannian Tonnetz theories with serial approaches to chordal structures. In particular, it provides the generalization of the neo-Riemannian P, R, L transformations via the notion of 'drift' operator, which is the main novelty of the approach. At the same time, the book is thorough in building the formal framework covering many moments and details, with special attention to trichords and tetrachords, which allow the geometric visualization of their structure helping to understand the more abstract transformations in higher-dimensional networks.
Features
Chord transformations are explained from a new approach, by considering the chord as a two-component entity (root and mode), which is simpler than that of the neo-Riemannian theory
The chords transformations presented can be easily converted to computational algorithms to deal with higher-dimensional Tonnetze
Presents the study of chords with a scope that goes from scratch up to higher levels, about to develop research works
