It is interesting that women who campaign for women's rights and interests in Iran have not considered engaging with women who are neither conventional Muslims nor strongly secular, but instead explore other aspects of religion and spirituality. The women examined in this study identify themselves as believers in God, but have different views of religion; some wish to be called religious but do not follow the official Islamic Shia and have their own interpretation of what it means to be a good Muslim, while some think of spirituality as their religion and refer to themselves as "spiritual". Scholarship on women in Iran has not yet taken such an approach, and has not considered women's interests in spirituality with regard to religion. As such, this book differs greatly from existing work on Iranian women's lives after the Islamic revolution. It examines the potential feminist implications of women's involvement in one of the most popular spiritual movements, "Inter-universal Mysticism" and its emancipatory potential for women. The central argument here is that feminist spirituality is an expression of women's power to identify, explore, and assess their own spiritual experiences in order to construct their own sense of self and transform their lives. As such, this book broadens discourses about women in Iran by examining the link between spirituality, coping, and meaning-making in the lives of women involved with Inter-universal Mysticism. The study's unique contribution is not simply that it extends the range of contexts in which gender can be analysed, but rather that it, through the lens of feminism, demonstrates the significance of women's choice of spirituality as an investigative issue which can elucidate women's wider social, cultural and political processes in contemporary Iran.

It recounts the tragic love story of the Magic Crossbow, the 2200-year-old fort of Cổ Loa and its builder, An Dương Vương. It describes the key battles, including the invasion of the Yue kingdoms by the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, his general, Zhao Tuo and the ending of the Nan-yue kingdom. It has 71 photographs, maps and diagrams showing locations of interest to a traveller but limited to this period only. It also includes lines from some famous Vietnamese poems, songs and quotes, all translated into English. Sources of the books came from archaeological evidence, works by historians, ancient Chinese texts and Vietnamese records, plus more recent academic papers and local newspaper articles. The book aims to draw a balance between telling stories that engage a traveller and, at the same time discussing historical findings that are of interest to serious scholars. It is Volume One of six volumes covering the history of Vietnam to 1954. The other volumes are to be published in the next few years.

We already have so many catechisms, what do we need of another? We indeed have in abundance, catechisms and religious manuals which appeal only to the intellect; books that do not aim at the warmth of expression and the fervent, persuasive eloquence which appeal to the heart, the force and vivifying power which affect the will through the influence of the Holy Spirit.

This Catechism aims at cultivating all the three powers of the soul: the intellect, the emotions, and the will. It does not therefore content itself with mere definitions. The idea in it is not to teach men to philosophize about religion, but to make them good Christians who will delight in their faith. Consequently questions of scholastic theology, doctrines debated among theologians, are either omitted altogether or merely receive a passing mention.
In this catechism, Fr. Spirago has endeavored to divest religious teaching of the appearance of learning, and to present it in a popular and simple form. Technical terms, in which almost all religious manuals abound, even those intended for children, are carefully eliminated from his pages since, while useful and necessary for seminarians and theologians, they are out of place in a book intended for the laity. Popular manuals of religion ought to be couched in plain and simple language, like that used by Our Lord and the apostles, easy to understand. What we need is something that will touch the heart and influence the will, not merely cram the mind with knowledge.
Attention may also be called to the fact that the teaching of the Church is not presented in a dry, abstract form, but is rendered attractive and interesting by illustrations, comparisons, and quotations from well-known writers. It also has many extracts from the writings of the Father which are quoted mainly to elucidate and illustrate, not to prove the truths that are enunciated.
