Gifts and Ritual: The Charismata of Romans 12: 6-8 in the Context of Roman Religion By Teresa Lee McCaskill
2023 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 1978715668 | EPUB | 1 MB
Paul's teaching about divine benefactions in Rom 12:6-8 extends the theme of worship that he establishes in Rom 12:1-2. Together, these passages address a uniquely gentile dilemma that his audience faced as new Christ-followers, which was the challenge of finding acceptable replacements for former cultic activities that were woven through all of life's stages, from birth to death. One of the chief shortcomings of the scholars that have written about Rom 12:6-8 is a failure to address what his gentile audience might have brought to his teaching and how his alignment of gifts with ritual (Rom 12:1-2) mirrored their polytheistic background. By analyzing examples from ancient texts and artifacts, Teresa Lee McCaskill shows that all seven of the terms Paul uses in Rom 12:6-8 would have had recognizable cultic antecedents for first-century worshipers in Rome. McCaskill presents a theoretical model that discusses how Paul's gentile audience might have viewed the charismata and considered them as examples of sanctioned practices to replace former rituals. She also weighs how these gifts could have served to further Paul's missional objectives.

Chris Ogden, "Global India "
English | ISBN: 1032244011 | 2023 | 278 pages | EPUB | 1088 KB
India's anticipated rise to prominence in what has been termed the 'Asian 21st century' will have a significant impact upon geopolitics in the coming decades. As India's stature continues to increase across Asia and the world, appreciating which interests and principles structure the country's international interaction has never been more important. Central to these dynamics is how India's identity - and the longstanding values, principles and practices underpinning it - acts as the paramount factor that deeply structures the conduct of its international affairs. Acknowledging this centrality, this edited volume uses this factor as its foremost theme of analysis through which to understand and analyse India's most important regional, great power and diplomatic interactions. Not only providing a mechanism better to appreciate the historical foundations of these relationships, the focus on identity is also necessary to appreciate how the Hindu nationalism of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under the leadership of Narendra Modi is now permeating Indian diplomacy. For the BJP, the pursuit - and attainment - of global influence and heightened status is the driving imperative of the BJP with regard to India's contemporary international affairs.

Global Norms in Local Contexts: Examining Cases of Environmental Governance in France
by Melissa Schnyder
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031411072 | 91 Pages | True ePUB | 0.23 MB

This Brief discusses the translation of global environmental norms across local contexts in France. It provides a snapshot of how global-level environmental norms travel vertically across levels of governance, from the global to the local, and asks how global environmental norms are (re)interpreted by local-level actors and translated to a particular local context.
Chapters focus on three in-depth case studies, each involving multi-stakeholder environmental governance: (1) the Cerbère-Banyuls Marine Nature Reserve, (2) the Thau Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG), and (3) the Biovallée biodistrict. In each of these cases, the author assesses how twilight norms are used to frame, promote, and generally develop a local discourse that centers on environmental conservation and sustainability.
By combining concepts from the literature on norm localization with processes from the literature on norm-based institutional change, this Brief will generate new insights on the dynamic aspects of norm translation. As such, it will be of interest to researchers studying environmental politics, comparative policy, governance, and norms.

Global Perspectives on Animism and Autonomous Technologies
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031882083 | 400 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 9 MB
This volume provides a timely analysis of the emerging phenomenon of autonomous technology, a topic of intense contemporary importance given the transformative potential and risks posed by rapidly developing AI systems. It utilizes a unique approach by focusing on the ways that these technologies can be understood via the lens of animism and 'techno-animism,' a term that denotes how society and individual users are attributing life-like properties - agency, intention, and will - to technological systems. The volume further interrogates and critiques the ways that autonomous technologies are often intentionally designed to promote socioemotional connections with users. The volume investigates such technologies through a variety of global settings and interdisciplinary lenses. With contributions from scholars across anthropology, sociology, communication studies, law, and design theory, it offers a range of perspectives on how autonomous technologies are reshaping cultural and social institutions worldwide. Furthermore, this collection addresses the urgent need for concrete research on the readiness of legal and social frameworks to incorporate autonomous technologies. With the imminent widespread integration of autonomous technologies into our everyday lives, the volume provides a critical examination of human-technology interaction and its immediate implications, guiding readers through the intricate web of digital interconnectedness that is on course to define the future of humanity.

Manfred Man-fat Wu, "Globalisation and Second Language Identity: Opportunities, Challenges, and the Importance of Morality"
English | ISBN: 3031682475 |2024 | 170 pages | EPUB | 440 KB
This book focuses on how globalisation influences and affects second language (L2) identity, including both benefits and caveats of globalisation. The author takes a philosophical perspective to the topic, drawing on the theoretical foundations of Kant and Hegel to explore positive and negative impacts of issues related to globalisation such as human rights and identity reconstruction, and argues that morality should be considered as a key component in fostering L2 identity. Since L2 autonomy - the capacity to control the psychological and socio-cultural dimensions related to L2 learning (Benson, 2001) - is an integral part of L2 identity and contributes to successful language learning, the author considers how to reconceptualise and foster L2 autonomy in the age of globalisation. He finds that globalisation has created new challenges and demands for L2 teachers, and explores how far they must transform their identity for effective teaching, including recommendations for the future. This book will be of particular interest to students, teachers and academics in fields including applied linguistics, language education, language teacher training, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics, as well as scholars of sociology and philosophy.

Globalisation, Nation-Building and History Education
by Joseph Zajda and John Whitehouse
English | 2024 | ISBN: 303144812X | 176 Pages | True ePUB | 0.36 MB

This book uses historiography and discourse analysis to provide a new insight into understanding the nexus between ideologies, the state, and nation-building―as depicted in history school textbooks. It focuses on the interpretation of social and political change, significant events, and examining possible new biases and omissions in school textbooks. The 'Europeanization' of history textbooks in the EU is an example of western-dominated Grand Narrative of pluralist democracy, multiculturalism, and human rights, according to the canon of a particularly European dimension. Various public debates in the USA, China, the Russian Federation (RF), Japan, and elsewhere, dealing with understandings of a nation-building, national identity, and history education point out to parallels between the political significance of school history and the history education debates globally.
The book demonstrates that the issue of national identity and balanced representations of the past continue to dominate the debate surrounding the goals, dominant ideologies and content of history textbooks, and historical narratives. It concludes that competing discourses and ideologies will continue to define and shape the nature and significance of historical knowledge, ideologies and the direction of values education in history textbooks. This book provides an easily accessible, practical, yet scholarly insights into local and global trends in the field of history education, and should be required reading for a broad spectrum of users, including policy-makers, academics, graduate students, education policy researchers, administrators, and practitioners.

Yun Kwon Yoo, "Globalization and Human Subjectivity: Insights from Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit"
English | ISBN: 1725297108 | 2021 | 248 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Globalization and Human Subjectivity argues that Hegelian subjectivity could serve as a philosophical basis for a new conception of human subjectivity for the age of globalization. Why, then, does globalization demand a new conception of human subjectivity at all? What constitutes the Hegelian subjectivity such that it is not only relevant and but also necessary to the contemporary, postmodern context of globalization? This book largely addresses these two questions. Capitalist globalization, the context in which we find ourselves today, strategically leads to the "death of the subject," in the sense that it reduces human beings merely to consumers who, without critical subjectivity, simply succumb to the imperialism of a globalizing market. In this context, we are impelled to envision a new conception of human subjectivity for the age of globalization. This book explores Hegel's view on human subjectivity as spiritual subjectivity, particularly presented in his Phenomenology of Spirit, which could function as a new anthropological vision about what it means to be authentically human in a globalizing world, that is, a sort of cosmopolitan citizen who is constantly universalizing oneself through self-transcending, self-determined ethico-political actions in solidarity with others to create a global community of co-existence and co-prosperity for all.

Globalization of Communes : 1950-2010 By Yaacov Oved
2013 | 329 Pages | ISBN: 1412849489 | EPUB | 1 MB
After World War II, communes and cooperative communities became internationally oriented in their membership and networking began to develop. Unlike earlier such enterprises, these groups shared an openness to international relationships. This was evident both in the groups' social composition, and in the extension of networks beyond their own country. Such globalization opened up the possibility of comparative analysis, which has become a trend in research since the 1950s. The dynamism and speed with which voluntary communities have spread throughout the world is impressive. In the 1950s there were only a few hundred such societies, but by the end of the last century there were thousands. These have taken a variety of forms. There are religious and secular communes, intentional communities, ecological communities, co-housing projects, various types of Christian communities, communities of Eastern religions, and spiritual communities inspired by New Age thought. Yaacov Oved shows that such societies maintain a community based on cooperation and expand their influence through newspapers, television, and the Internet. Their chief characteristic is their openness to the outside world, and their search for a way to move beyond a world of individualism and competitiveness. To accomplish this, they embrace all the tools of the modern world. Oved observes that those who predicted the failure of communes and intentional communities failed to appreciate the extent to which people in today's society aspire to communal life. This book answers the doubters and does so with a sense of deep historical understanding.

Globalization on Trial : The Human Condition and the Information Civilization By Farhang Rajaee
2000 | 165 Pages | ISBN: 1552502082 | PDF | 1 MB
Globalization on Trial challenges the conventional view that equates globalization with the expansion of the capitalist economic system. With a broad historical and holistic brush, the author presents a view of globalization that is both multidisciplinary and multicultural. What opportunities must we seize? What dangers must we overcome? Rajaee examines human governance and the paradox of globalism and nationalism (or "nativism"), providing a particularly fresh perspective on Islamic civilization. He also focuses on our education system and how it will have to adapt to meet the new challenges of our global, information age.

Globalization, Power, and Democracy By Marc F. Plattner; Aleksander Smolar
2000 | 185 Pages | ISBN: 0801865689 | PDF | 1 MB
Though the year 2000 marks the turn of the century and of the millennium, the great turn in the realm of international politics occurred a decade earlier, with the Revolutions of 1989-91. The breakup of the Soviet Union's external empire in Eastern Europe, soon followed by the demise of the USSR itself, destroyed the bipolar structure that had characterized world politics for almost half a century. But while the dramatic collapse of communism left no room for doubt that the era of the Cold War had come to an end, there was very little agreement about the nature of the new international order being born. This book explores the emerging post-Cold War international system and its implications for the future expansion and consolidation of democracy. Bringing together both experts on international relations and scholars of democracy from Europe, North America, and Asia, it examines the link between these two subjects in a way that is rarely done. While a large literature has emerged in recent years on the effects of democracy on international relations (the debate over what is often called the theory of "democratic peace"), the authors of the present volume instead examine the other side of this relationship--the impact of the international system on the prospects for democracy. Globalizing Customer Solutions : The Enlightened Confluence of Technology, Innovation, Trade, and Investment By Edmund B. Fitzgerald
2000 | 175 Pages | ISBN: 0313001499 | PDF | 1 MB
In the last half of the 20th century, the world economy has benefitted from a globalization process driven by the enlightened confluence of technology, innovation, trade and foreign direct investment. This book broadens our understanding of that process. Opening with a review of current global economic metrics and the significant differences between advanced and developing nations, the book goes on to discuss the globalization paradigm and the forces driving it. Discussing the importance of new ideas and new technology in continued economic growth, the volume shows how the protection of intellectual property encourages innovation. Also covering the evolution of international trade, the book reviews trade distortions from both external and internal sources, comparing trade on a multilateral, non-discriminatory basis with alternative trade practics, such as free trade and custom unions. The works also reviews the origins and functions of the new World Trade Organization. Describing the rapidly growing practice of foreign direct investment, the book shows how FDI is closely linked to international trade and concludes with a review of the important function FDI can play in the bundling and delivery of the resources for accelerated economic development of the emerging world.

David Sausdal, "Globalizing Local Policing: An Ethnography of Change and Concern Among Danish Detectives "
English | ISBN: 3031189183 | 2023 | 263 pages | EPUB | 440 KB
The book examines 'the globalization of local policing' through an ethnographic study of the Danish Police. Where many studies are looking into how larger inter- or transnational policing bodies and policies are changing the world of policing, few have gauged how local, public police forces are also globalizing. This book provides some unique insights into this under-researched process. Specifically, it describes the daily practices and perceptions of two Danish detective task forces, tasked with the investigation of organized property crimes committed by foreign nationals. In the book, readers get to see how the detectives think and work, including the many efforts they make in attuning their daily work to a more global reality. More so, readers get to see how the detectives fail and the many frustrations and concerns that such changes include. One the one hand, Danish detectives very much understand the need to de-localize and develop their work. On the other hand, they feel that many of these changes are in conflict with what they find to be real and rewarding police work. For people interested in contemporary issues of policing, the book thus points to a puzzling paradox. Globalization might be making for more mobile and even mobilised local forces, more technologically driven and collaborating with international partners. However, these very processes are also making local officers feel more disarmed than ever. Ultimately, the book describes why that is, its consequences, as well as how to imagine a form of global policing more in tune with its local actors.

Halvor Kvandal, "God Naturalized: Epistemological Reflections on Theistic Belief in light of the New Science of Religion "
English | ISBN: 3030831809 | 2022 | 212 pages | EPUB | 444 KB
This volume argues that theistic philosophy should be seen not as an "armchair" enterprise but rather as a critical endeavor to bring philosophy of religion into close contact with emerging sciences of religion. This text engages with the rationality of religious belief by investigating central problems and arguments in philosophy of religion from the perspective of new naturalistic research. A central question the book analyzes is whether findings in cognitive science of religion(CSR) falsify or undermine religious ideas and beliefs.

With regard to CSR, this volume offers a sustained and critical investigation of the neutrality and positive-relevance view, before offering a re-appraisal of the conflict view. The text argues that when scrutinizing these views, much more attention must be paid to specific normative premises that allow empirical findings to have epistemic relevance. A novel feature is the theoretical application of analytical epistemology in virtue-epistemology to the central question of whether CSR undermines, supports, or is neutral with respect to religious belief. This book appeals to upper-level students and researchers in the field.
