With this goal in mind, the book introduces a number of discourse analysis tools and shows how to apply them to a range of Filipino texts―including a children's picture book story, some mental health advice about coping with COVID-19, President Duterte's speech about the Philippine government's initial response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a comment piece from a student newspaper about problems with online learning modules produced by the Department of Education, and a reflective text about growing up in Davao. This is the first book to draw on a range of functional linguistic tools to analyse Filipino discourse in order to provide deeper insights into the role of language in bilingual education, the linguistic enactment of power, and the importance of thinking across languages when analysing texts. Key issues addressed include the complementarity of CDA and PDA, SFL's model of social context (as register and genre), analysing bilingual texts and bilingual education. The book fosters appliable linguistics as a dialectic of theory, description, and practice―supporting Filipino discourse analysts as they engage with the challenge of giving people access to a range of tools they can use productively to mean and thereby more successfully pursue their social goals. As such, it provides a model for researchers of other languages of how to encourage the analysis of meaning in texts within and beyond the clause. It is relevant to scholars across the spectrum of linguistics, particularly those working in Systemic Functional Linguistics.

It has been clear for at least 50 years the disadvantages that small businesses face in competing for U.S. government contracts. The Small Business Act of 1953 created the Small Business Administration (SBA), an independent agency in the executive branch that counsels and assists specific types of small businesses including firms owned by minorities and other socially and economically disadvantaged individuals and firms owned by women. Women-owned small businesses, however, are underrepresented or substantially underrepresented in some industries. In 2002, the SBA Office of Federal Contract Assistance for Women Business Owners (CAWBO) organized a draft study containing a preliminary set of approximations of the representation of women-owned small businesses in federal prime contracts over $25,000 by industry. Because of the past legal challenges to race- and gender-conscious contracting programs at the federal and local levels, the SBA asked the Committee on National Statistics of the National Academies to conduct an independent review of relevant data and estimation methods prior to finalizing the CAWBO study. The Steering Committee on Women-Owned Small Businesses in Federal Contracting was created and charged with holding a workshop to discuss topics including the accuracy of data and methods to estimate the use of women-owned small businesses in federal contracting and the definition of "underrepresentation" and "substantial underrepresentation" in designating industries for which preferential contracting programs might be warranted. Analyzing Information on Women-Owned Small Businesses in Federal Contracting presents the committee's report as well as the recommendations that committees have made.

It was during this time that Quinn experienced the major conflict of his life with AME founder Bishop Richard Allen over Quinn's independent activities in New York. Much to Bishop Allen's frustration, Quinn-one of the AME Church's "Four Horsemen"along with Allen-associated with ministers of other denominations, collaborated with the city's African American civic leaders, rescued freedom seekers, and operated beyond Allen's reach. Quinn later established a 150-member independent church in the city, earning Allen's wrath and a five-year exile from the church.
This remarkable missionary's life embodies the struggles and challenges that shaped the lives of nineteenth-century Black leaders, and those who followed them. Apostle of Liberation explores the historical figure as well as the man of God-his spiritual gifts, his character and uniqueness, as well as his many strengths and failings. The book carefully lays out his trials and triumphs, and the magnitude of his accomplishments in the face of legally sanctioned national opposition, denominational fights and schisms, and devastating Supreme Court decisions.
