No other female portrait artisthad the notoriety or esteemed clientele that Amalia Kussner did. Although photography was on the rise during the late 1800s, miniatures had a feeling and soul to them that photos could not capture. Amalia's portraits provided a grandeur that presented Gilded Age elites as American royalty. Her subjects included reigning social queen Mrs. Caroline Astor, Mrs. John Jacob Astor, Consuelo Vanderbilt, Mamie Fish, "dollar heiress" Minnie Paget, Edward VII of England,Czar Nicholas II and Alexandra of Russia, and diamond magnate Cecil Rhodes.
From the mid-1890s to 1910, having a Kussner miniature was just as important as owning fine jewelry or a mansion in Newport. Amalia's style was also provocative for the late Victorian period. Her subjects were draped in off-the-shoulder satin or tulle, with their hair loosely pinned around their heads and tendrils framing their faces. She kept the women's best features but gave them an almost mythical appearance, akin to the fairy queen Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Amalia Kussner has been included, along with other nineteenth-century women artists, in the "first wave of feminism" in large part because she commanded very high commissions, comparable to male artists of the time. She was fascinating and sometimes mysterious-particularly regarding her sudden marriage to lawyer Charles du Pont Coudert. She achieved fame and fortune, but her story also revealed a few lawsuits, scandals, and lies.

The Nature of Slavery: Environment and Plantation Labor in the Anglo-Atlantic World by Katherine Johnston

In the late eighteenth century, planters in the Caribbean and the American South insisted that only Black people could labor on plantations, arguing that Africans, unlike Europeans, had bodies particularly suited to cultivate crops in hot climates. Historians have mainly taken planters at their word, assuming that they observed differences in health between Black and white bodies and that these differences underpinned the maintenance of an enslaved Black plantation labor force.
In The Nature of Slavery, Katherine Johnston disrupts this longstanding claim about biological racial difference. Drawing on extensive personal correspondence, colonial records, and a wealth of other sources, she reveals that planters observed no health differences between Black and white people. They made their claims about people's ability to labor in spite of their experiences, not because of them. For planters and physicians, local environments, much more than skin color, affected bodily health. Moreover, they thought that all bodies-African, European, and creole-responded similarly to various environmental conditions on plantations. Yet when slavery and their economic livelihoods were at stake, slaveholders and slave traders promoted a climatic dichotomy, in which Africans' and Europeans' bodies differed significantly from one another. By putting the health of enslaved laborers at significant risk, planters' actions made environmental racism a central part of Atlantic slavery.
White plantation owners contributed to historical myths about enslaved bodies that permeated the public imagination and became accepted as natural. In doing so, The Nature of Slavery contends, they helped to construct and circulate a pervasive and groundless theory of race across the Atlantic world.

On the other, it uncovers the overlooked, from the 1980s comedic film makers who followed in the footsteps of Bill Forsyth to the variety of present-day Scottish film making - a body of work that encompasses explorations of multiculturalism, exploitation of the macabre and much else in between.In addition to analysing an eclectic range of films and filmmakers, The New Scottish Cinema also examines the diverse industrial, institutional and cultural contexts which have allowed Scottish film to evolve and grow since the 1970s, and relates these to the images of Scotland which artists have put on screen.
In so doing, the book narrates a story of interest to any student of contemporary British film.
