This book is devoted to the logic synthesis of field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based circuits of Mealy finite state machines (FSM). Three new methods of state assignment are proposed, which allows obtaining FSM circuits required minimum amount of internal chip resources.
Logic Synthesis for FPGA-Based Mealy Finite State Machines: Structural Decomposition in Logic Design contains several original synthesis and optimization methods based on the structural decomposition of FPGA-based FSM circuits developed by the authors. To optimize FSM circuits, the authors introduce the use of three methods of state assignment: twofold, extended, and composite. These methods allow for the creation of two- or three-level architectures of FSM circuits. The authors also demonstrate how the proposed methods, FSM architectures and synthesis methods can replace known solutions based on either functional decomposition or classical methods of structural decomposition. The authors also show how these architectures have regular systems of interconnections and demonstrate positive features compared to methods based on functional decomposition, including producing circuits with fewer elements that are faster and consume less power than their counterparts. The book includes experimental results proving the efficiency of the proposed solutions and compares the numbers in Look-up Tables (LUTs), showing the performance (maximum operating frequency) and power consumption for various methods of state assignment.

Lolita between Adaptation and Interpretation : From Nabokov's Novel and Screenplay to Kubrick's Film By Anna Pilińska

This book offers a comparative analysis of three versions of Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita: namely, the original novel (1955), the script written by the novelist himself and published as Lolita: A Screenplay (1974), and Stanley Kubrick's film based on Lolita's storyline (1962). Kubrick's final product oscillates between adaptation and interpretation, as it draws from both Nabokov's novel and script, but also uses the improvisational talents of the cast, eventually rendering the director's firm auteurial hand clearly visible throughout the film. The book analyses how various additions and subtractions made first by Nabokov as a scriptwriter, and later by Kubrick as a movie director, influence the reception of the four main characters: Lolita, Humbert Humbert, Charlotte Haze, and Clare Quilty. The original novel's multilayered web of intertextual references - among them the works of Edgar Allan Poe and the typically Nabokovian critique of Freudian theories - becomes significantly reduced in the script and the film, with Kubrick additionally enriching the film version of the story with cinematic references. While Lolita the novel has been extensively researched and commented upon, and some criticism on the two film versions (Kubrick's 1962 production, and Lyne's 1997 film) is also available, the scope of Lolita: Between Adaptation and Interpretation includes in its analysis the text of Nabokov's original screenplay, which - although ultimately not used by Kubrick - provides fascinating insights into how the writer himself envisioned his own creation rendered in a movie adaptation. Kubrick's work departs significantly from the contents of both the novel and the screenplay, being closer to an auteur's interpretation of the original piece than its adaptation.

This volume initiates an inquiry into the relationship between Ludwig Wittgenstein's "analytic stance" towards philosophy and the inherently apophatic nature of his epistemology, a subject that has been repeatedly hinted at, but hitherto never thoroughly researched through this particular hermeneutical lens. In using the term "apophaticism," the book is not merely referring to the theological "via negativa" or to tendencies towards mysticism, but rather to a comprehensive epistemological stance that "refuses to identify truth with its formulation and to identify the understanding of the signifier with the knowledge of its signified reality," to use Christos Yannaras' definition. The question of whether Ludwig Wittgenstein's work can be approached as a particularly efflorescent case of the implementation of an implicitly (and at times explicitly) apophatic epistemology is herewith addressed. As such, this volume contends that such an approach would not merely provide elucidations on apophatic epistemologies, but rather shed potentially valuable hermeneutical light on Wittgenstein's work, functioning as an epistemological thread running through it. Consequently, the focal points here consist of questions concerning knowledge and its disclosure, ineffability, non-discursivity, the function of language, the limits of one's language as the limits of one's world, and the language of religion, among others. In addition, the volume's contribution to shedding more light on the apophatic aspects of Ludwig Wittgenstein's philosophy is enhanced by its inclusion of a broad spectrum of different approaches, with contributors ranging from Wittgenstein scholars to Patristics scholars-and beyond.
