Go and Do : Daring to Change the World One Story at a Time By Jay Milbrandt
2012 | 225 Pages | ISBN: 1414361351 | EPUB | 1 MB
With an MBA and a law degree from Pepperdine University, Jay Milbrandt had the world at his feet. But rather than following his peers into big firms with high profile clients and even higher salaries, Jay has chosen a completely different road--a journey that has led him across large portions of the globe to "go and do likewise," as Jesus modeled and instructed in His life on this earth. In his efforts to bring justice and healing to people all around the world, Jay's pursuit of justice has become an adventure far greater than he could have ever dreamed or imagined. As Christians, we are called to take a step of faith for Christ, to change ourselves, and perhaps by doing that, to change those we encounter along the way. Go and Do is an invitation for all of us to join in the adventure of God's story arc. It is an opportunity to understand why so many are finding such satisfaction and joy in reaching out to others. It is a chance to climb on board and discover exactly what role each of us can play in actively engaging this world as we, too, "go and do."

God and Karate on the Southside : Bridging Differences, Building American Communities By Joseph E. Yi
2009 | 230 Pages | ISBN: 0739138375 | PDF | 1 MB
Recent demographic changes have sparked debate about the civic health of American democracy. Democracy requires people of different backgrounds to be disposed toward working together, and it requires "little-noticed meeting places" where neighbors interact with each other, share their thinking, and address common problems. As issues of ethnic and social diversity become increasingly foregrounded, social scientists find pervasive social distrust and civic withdrawal in racially and ethnically heterogeneous communities, whether in big cities (Los Angeles) or small (Yakima, WA). In this book, Yi argues that increasing diversity can revitalize social and civic connectedness if our institutions rise up to the challenge of finding common ground and shared enterprise for people of different backgrounds. He highlights two types of organizational actors in the USA. One type renews and adapts longstanding religious, cultural, and civic traditions to a dynamic, multiethnic society. The second type attempts to introduce Americans to the many religious and cultural traditions from outside the United States. These tendencies point to a dynamic, "many-stranded" model of liberal-plural democracy, which fosters and benefits from a variety of group affiliations and types of engagement. Organizations that combine internal, authoritative community with external, plural outreach, such as some evangelical mega-churches and karate schools, connect people across racial and economic divides. In these bridging organizations, people find a sense of unity among diversity; they get to know each other as individuals, rather than as representatives of disliked groups. Using fieldwork on churches, karate schools, and other organizations in a racially mixed, Chicago Southside neighborhood as well as a broader analysis of race and religion in the 1972 "1998 General Social Survey, Yi combines classical democratic theory with compelling personal stories and rigorous empirical analysis. God and Karate in the Southside is the first

God in the New Testament By Warren Carter
2016 | 145 Pages | ISBN: 1426766335 | EPUB | 1 MB
Author Warren Carter addresses the ways in which New Testament writings present God by asking four questions about how God relates to others: How is God presented in relation to Israel? How is God presented in relation to Jesus and the Spirit? How is God presented in relation to believers/disciples/the church? How is God presented in relation to "the world"? Carter uses these questions to help draw out the most important factors in each of the New Testament writings discussed. "Rarely does one exclaim, "This is a real page-turner " when describing a book on the New Testament--but I must say it. With his characteristic concision and clarity, not to mention wit and conversational style, Carter leads us on a tour of "God-at-Work" in fifteen closely-read texts. What claims do the various texts make about God? What questions or "red flags" do these texts raise? What effect do or should these texts have upon us as readers today? Carter intrepidly takes up some of the more challenging and cryptic NT texts and asks aloud many of the uncomfortable questions we've wondered about but might not have voiced so pointedly. He does not provide tidy answers, but his approach entices us not to give up, but rather to dive even deeper into the texts, their world, and ours. In reading this book, I was variously educated, entertained, challenged, and even moved." -Jaime Clark-Soles Professor of New Testament and Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas

God's Grace and Human Action : 'Merit' in the Theology of Thomas Aquinas By Joseph P. Wawrykow
2016 | 305 Pages | ISBN: 0268044333 | EPUB | 1 MB
Offering a fresh approach to one significant aspect of the soteriology of Thomas Aquinas, God's Grace and Human Action brings new scholarship and insights to the issue of merit in Aquinas's theology. Through a careful historical analysis, Joseph P. Wawrykow delineates the precise function of merit in Aquinas's account of salvation. Wawrykow accounts for the changes in Thomas's teaching on merit from the early Scriptum on the Sentences of Peter Lombard to the later Summa theologiae in two ways. First, he demonstrates how the teaching of the Summa theologiae discloses the impact of Thomas's profound encounter with the later writings of Augustine on predestination and grace. Second, Wawrykow notes the implications of Thomas's mature theological judgment that merit is best understood in the context of the plan of divine wisdom. The portrayal of merit in sapiential terms in the Summa permits Thomas to insist that the attainment of salvation through merit testifies not only to the dignity of the human person but even more to the goodness of God.

Gold Prices and Wages (Routledge Revivals) By J. A. Hobson
2010 | 80 Pages | ISBN: 0415589401 | PDF | 1 MB
First published in 1913, this Routledge Revivals title reissues J. A. Hobson's seminal analysis of the causal link between the rise in gold prices and the increase in wages and consumer buying power in the early years of the Twentieth Century. Contrary to the assertions of some notable contemporary economists and businessmen, Hobson contended that the relationship between gold prices and wages (and the resulting social unrest across much of Europe) was in fact much more complex than it initially appeared and that there were significantly more important factors in the rise of contemporary wealth, such as the rapid enlargement of state enterprise and joint stock companies; a wide extension of banking and general financial apparatus; and the opening of profitable fields of investment for the development of underdeveloped countries, which helped raise the rate of interest and profits.

Gospel for Muslims : Gospel for Muslims Learning to Read the Bible By Steve Bell
2012 | 125 Pages | ISBN: 1850788804 | EPUB | 1 MB
Steve Bell has distilled three decades of experience in cross-cultural communication of the Gospel to ordinary Muslim people. Gospel For Muslims asserts that all theology - including Western theology - is influenced by the culture of those who write it. Help is therefore needed to move beyond the western understanding of the Bible in order to tell Muslims the good news about Jesus in more accessible ways and enable them to believe and follow him in culturally appropriate ways - even if it means doing so from outside institutionalized Christianity.

Governance and Performance in Public and Non-Profit Organizations By Alessandro Hinna; Luca Gnan; Fabio Monteduro
2016 | 265 Pages | ISBN: 1786351080 | EPUB | 1 MB
Studies in Public and Non-Profit Governance (SPNPG) publishes double-blind peer reviewed articles in a growing area of governance research. The series focuses on the 'micro' level of governance in public and non-profit sector. Compared to the wider debate on corporate governance in the private sector and to the literature on the 'macro' and 'meso' levels of governance in the public sector, the organizational (micro) level of governance remains a neglected area of governance in the public and non-profit sector. Therefore, governance systems, mechanisms and roles are primarily investigated at organizational level. SPNPG allows for the establishment of an engaged community of researchers very active in the field. It aims to contribute to the definition of the theoretical components that assign an innovation role to governance systems in public and non profit organizations. It also highlights the opportunity for a deeper analysis of governance mechanisms in their relationships with both the external (stakeholders) actors and the internal (management) actors and address the conditions which enable governance mechanisms to effectively cover their own roles.

Governance Networks in the Public Sector by Erik Hans Klijn, Joop Koppenjan, Wouter Spekkink
English | April 21, 2025 | ISBN: 1032514191 | 268 pages | PDF | 4.82 Mb
Governance Networks in the Public Sector presents a comprehensive study of governance networks and the management of complexities in network settings. Public, private, and non-profit organisations are increasingly faced with complex, wicked problems when making decisions, developing policies, or delivering services in the public sector. These activities take place in networks of interdependent actors guided by diverging and sometimes conflicting perceptions and strategies. As a result, these networks are dominated by cognitive, strategic, and institutional complexities. Dealing with these complexities requires sophisticated forms of coordination: network management.

This book provides a conceptual framework and analytical tools to study the complexities involved in handling wicked problems in governance networks in the public sector. The book also discusses strategies and management recommendations for government, business, and third sector organisations operating in and governing networks. This second edition of the book is a truly revised edition, incorporating recent developments in network governance theory and practice, such as the influences of traditional and social media on network governance processes.
This volume is an essential text for advanced students of public management, public administration, public policy, and political science, and for public managers and policymakers.

Governance, Management, and Accountability in Secondary Education in Sub-Saharan Africa By World Bank
2008 | 95 Pages | ISBN: 0821373463 | EPUB | 1 MB
Increasingly the role of management and governance is recognized as important for providing and delivering effective services at all levels of education. In view of the growing demand for more and better services at secondary education levels, these are crucial issues that must be addressed urgently. Sub-Saharan Africas secondary education and training systems must become more efficient and more effective. The current (unit) costs of junior and senior secondary education in most African countries prevent massive expansion of post-primary education. This demands a holistic approach to governance and management issues. In parallel, there is a demand from civil society and governments for greater accountability. This study aims at presenting best practices and identifying sustainable development plans for expansion and improved quality and efficiency in the delivery of secondary education in Sub-Saharan Africa through better governance, management, and accountability.

Governing Sex, Building the Nation : The Politics of Prostitution in Postcolonial Taiwan (1945-1979) By Wan-Chen Yen
2015 | 295 Pages | ISBN: 1443872385 | PDF | 1 MB
Governing Sex, Building the Nation explores the sexual politics of Chinese nationalism in Taiwan between 1945 and 1979, focusing on the politicisation of prostitution and its role in the reproduction of postcolonial nationhood. This book examines the political struggle over prostitution policy that was framed within and through contested knowledge, rationales and tactics underpinning the nationalist project, constructing and policing prostitution as a social/national problem, yet also creating a market for prostitution and turning it into political opportunities that served a variety of nationalistic interests. Locating this in the larger Asian struggle with colonial influence on prostitution, the author provides interesting and rare accounts of official perspectives and tactics regarding prostitution in the Taiwanese context, in order to explore the interlinkages between post/colonialism, prostitution and nationalism. Featuring insights into Japanese and Chinese colonialism and the Eastern Asian experience of postcolonialism, this book shifts academic attention from mainstream postcolonial studies, which highlight Western colonialism and Indian and African postcolonialism. It thereby discovers more diverse approaches to postcolonial nation-building and a more intricate interaction between colonial powers and the colonised society, and, as such, adds new depth to postcolonial studies. Bringing the politics of nationalism and postcolonialism into the study of prostitution policies, this book also provides an understanding of prostitution in a once-colonised society in contrast to the broadly recognised gender and sexual politics of prostitution in the Western context.

Governing Street-Level Bureaucracies (Routledge Studies in the Sociology of Work, Professions and Organisations) by Kerstin Jacobsson, Håkan Johansson
English | April 22, 2025 | ISBN: 1032331941 | 166 pages | PDF | 7.83 Mb
This book examines how caseworkers are governed in today's street-level bureaucracies. It redefines our understanding of public sector governance by highlighting the subtle, informal, and everyday forms of organizational governance that shape caseworkers' subjectivities beyond formal policies and professional identities. Based on four distinct types of normative governance - 'governance by discourse', 'governance by emotions', 'governance by peers', and 'governance by numbers, colours, and symbols', the book shows how caseworkers are shaped as organizational staff members alongside their roles as welfare professionals and welfare state bureaucrats.

Governing Street-Level Bureaucracies will be of interest to scholars and students in organizational sociology, street-level bureaucracy research, public administration, and critical management studies. It also provides valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners seeking to understand caseworkers' responses to public governance and public sector reforms.

Graphical Facilitation: Enabling Conversation And Learning Through Images by Curie Scott, Steve Hutchinson
English | November 29, 2024 | ISBN: 1032531452 | 210 pages | MOBI | 16 Mb
If 'a picture is worth a thousand words,' this book provides an approach to help create professional pictures that productively and powerfully capture conversations and thinking for individual and collective learning. Individuals are bombarded by information, and organizations, managers, and teachers often lack a corresponding set of tools to make sense of this complexity―resulting in far too many "death by bullet-point" presentations. This is that toolkit, also offering invitations to readers to extend their thinking past these tools to enable the creation (and co-creation with teams, learners, and clients) of graphical depictions, models, and metaphors to help people make sense of their world. This accessible book is constructed as a visual reference so readers can quickly pick out the specific tool or strategy they need, whether working with individuals and teams to promote self-awareness, develop emotional intelligence, improve communication, or articulate vision and strategy.

This clear and adaptable guide will be a welcome resource for teachers, trainers, managers, and coaches to empower people to learn, think, and create in a powerful, memorable, and graphical way.
