Aviators, fighter pilots, and test pilots coined the phrases "spam in a can" (how astronauts felt prelaunch as they sat in a tiny capsule atop a rocket booster); "tickety-boo" (things are fine), and "the Eagle has landed" (Neil Armstrong's famous quote when Apollo 11 landed on the Moon).
This dictionary captures a broader foundation for language of the Space Age based on the historic principles employed by the Oxford English Dictionary and Webster's New Third International Dictionary. Word histories for major terms are detailed in a conversational tone, and technical terms are deciphered for the interested student and lay reader.

Echoing from the mountainous Vosges front of World War I come the rare accounts of an elite French foot soldier-a chasseur à pied. Robert Pellissier, born in France in 1882, had grown up in the United States and was teaching at Stanford when the Great War broke out in his homeland. Returning as a volunteer, he saw uninterrupted months of trench warfare in the Vosges mountains of Alsace, the only region where French troops actually captured German territory, a sector largely neglected in World War I literature.
Pellissier's diary and his letters to relatives in America show a panorama of this ghastly war: from the horror of being under fire with three thousand German shells falling on the French troops every day to the monotony of long quiet hours spent in cold, wet trenches. He writes of the grinding and indecisive character of the fighting in the Vosges and of the almost ritualistic shelling and limited tactical offensives, such as the attack at Steinbach in December 1914. His later letters were written from the hospital, from officer training school, and from the front at the Somme. He relays news of all the major battlefields-Flanders, Verdun, Russia, Austria, Gallipoli, Italy, Serbia, and the Suez. He also comments on the new technology that changed the nature of war: the machine gun, new airplanes, Uboats, improved artillery, barbed wire, and poison gases.
Drama and a sympathetic human voice combine to make this account of a littlereported French front a valuable addition to the literature on World War I. Whether visiting the battlefields of Europe, researching the history of the war, or sitting in an armchair at home, readers will find Pellissier a reliable and personable guide.

Que parte dos Estados Unidos esteve sob o domínio de seis países diferentes? A resposta, dado o título deste livro, é óbvia, e talvez seja por isso que poucos lugares na América têm cidadãos com um orgulho tão inflamado pela sua terra natal. Como escreveu John Steinbeck em Viagens com Charley: Em Busca da América, "o Texas é um estado de espírito, mas penso que é mais do que isso. É uma mística que se aproxima de uma religião. Apesar de toda a sua enorme variedade de espaço, clima e aparência física, e apesar de todas as disputas internas, contendas e lutas, o Texas tem uma coesão apertada talvez mais forte do que qualquer outra secção da América." Não é raro que o texano médio sinta grande orgulho pelo simples facto de ser texano e, mesmo que também seja um americano orgulhoso, pode até brincar com a noção de que o Estado da Estrela Solitária pode (e talvez deva) ser ele próprio uma grande nação. Dizer que algo é "do tamanho do Texas" exprime grandeza e imponência, e os seus habitantes demonstraram certamente industriosidade suficiente para fazer desta parte da América do Norte um dos estados que mais contribuem para o produto interno bruto do país.
Quando várias revoluções obrigaram os europeus a abandonar o continente, o Texas deixou de pertencer à Espanha e à França para se tornar parte do Império Mexicano; mais tarde, tornou-se um país independente e, atualmente, um dos 50 estados dos Estados Unidos. Durante um curto período, o Texas rebelde separou-se novamente dos EUA para se juntar aos Estados Confederados da América com outros estados secessionistas.
É claro que a guerra mais importante para o Texas ocorreu no início do século XIX e a história comum que se ouve na América é a da rebelião contra a intolerância, a opressão e a crueldade mexicana. A Batalha do Álamo, em particular, rodeada de lendas e testemunhos de heroísmo, é um exemplo exemplar de luta pela liberdade, comparável aos defensores judeus durante o cerco romano de Massada. As palavras "mártires" e "tirania mexicana" estão quase sempre presentes nos relatos, e "Remember the Alamo!" é um slogan de auto-glorificação e martírio que continua a ser uma das frases mais famosas da América.
A política do destino manifesto aumentou as tensões com o México na década de 1840. A metade norte do México formava a fronteira ocidental do território adquirido na compra do Louisiana. Naturalmente, a ideia de os Estados Unidos se expandirem até ao Oceano Pacífico alarmou o México, que detinha o que é atualmente a costa ocidental dos Estados Unidos.
No entanto, o México começou a considerar a expansão americana como um problema grave com a imigração de americanos para o seu território do nordeste. Estes americanos declararam a independência do México e criaram uma nação na província mexicana do Texas. Depois de conquistar a independência em 1836, o Texas tornou-se numa república independente.
O Texas pediu formalmente a sua anexação aos Estados Unidos em 1845. Esta anexação irritou o governo mexicano, que ainda considerava o Texas como parte do seu território. O México tinha avisado anteriormente que a anexação do Texas levaria o México a declarar guerra aos Estados Unidos.
Quando o projeto de lei de anexação foi aprovado pelo Congresso, incluía uma provocação adicional ao México: afirmava que a fronteira sul do Texas era o Rio Grande. O atual território controlado pela República do Texas não se estendia quase até ao Rio Grande, e esta fronteira representaria uma nova perda de território para os Estados Unidos.
O Presidente James K. Polk tinha feito campanha para expandir os Estados Unidos até ao Oceano Pacífico e tencionava tomar o território mexicano pela força, se necessário. O Presidente Polk enviou um emissário ao México para tentar comprar a Califórnia, bem como o território a norte do Rio Grande.
