Em 427 a.C., a antiga cidade-estado grega de Atenas estava a florescer. Cerca de 80 anos antes, os atenienses tinham formado a primeira democracia auto-representativa da história, a Guerra do Peloponeso contra Esparta tinha acabado de começar e Sócrates estava apenas a começar a lançar as bases do que viria a ser a filosofia ocidental.
Nenhuma das obras de Sócrates sobreviveu à Antiguidade, pelo que a maior parte do que se sabe sobre ele provém dos escritos dos seus seguidores, sobretudo de Platão. O que se sabe sobre Sócrates é que parecia ter feito da filosofia uma carreira, e Platão estava decidido a seguir-lhe as pisadas. No entanto, apesar de toda a influência da vida de Sócrates nos seus seguidores, foi a morte de Sócrates, por volta de 399 a.C., que os moldou verdadeiramente. Platão ficou tão amargurado com o julgamento de Sócrates em Atenas que se afastou completamente da democracia ateniense, e Aristóteles criticaria mais tarde os políticos que se baseavam na retórica; quando a vida de Aristóteles foi ameaçada, ele fugiu da Grécia e alegadamente comentou: "Não permitirei que os atenienses pequem duas vezes contra a filosofia".
Uma vez que Sócrates não escreveu nada, ou pelo menos nada que tenha sobrevivido à Antiguidade, tem havido desde então uma grande quantidade de estudos que tentam determinar a pessoa a quem devem ser atribuídas as posições filosóficas dos vários (e genuínos) diálogos socráticos de Platão. Apesar de Aristóteles ter insistido que Sócrates só se preocupava com a ética e não tinha qualquer teoria metafísica do tipo da que Platão propôs, a tentativa de ler o feio mas sábio Sócrates através dos diálogos platónicos continuou até ao século XX. A mudança de tom, de estilo e de temas filosóficos parecia ser um grande argumento de que os pontos de vista socráticos se encontram nas primeiras obras platónicas, ao passo que as obras posteriores têm a marca dos pontos de vista pessoais de Platão. O estudioso platónico Gregory Vlastos introduziu uma posição desenvolvimentista que quase se tornou uma ortodoxia nos estudos platónicos, deslocando a discussão do Sócrates histórico para Platão como filósofo. De acordo com o desenvolvimentismo, se os pontos de vista no diálogo não são explicitados apenas para serem refutados posteriormente, então a pessoa a quem devem ser atribuídos é Platão e não Sócrates. Estes pontos de vista filosóficos desenvolveram-se ao longo de um período de tempo, o que também justifica as várias inconsistências e a rejeição total das afirmações metafísicas do próprio Platão nos diálogos subsequentes.
Cerca de uma década após a morte de Sócrates, Platão regressou a Atenas e fundou a sua famosa Academia Platónica por volta de 387 a.C., que dirigiu durante 40 anos até à sua morte. Uma das crenças filosóficas de Platão era que escrever ensinamentos era menos valioso do que transmiti-los oralmente, e vários dos escritos de Platão são respostas a escritos anteriores seus, pelo que é difícil discernir as crenças pessoais de Platão. No entanto, Platão educou vários filósofos posteriores, o principal dos quais foi Aristóteles, e os seus escritos acabaram por formar a espinha dorsal da filosofia ocidental.
A par de Sócrates e Platão, Aristóteles é, sem dúvida, um dos mais influentes filósofos gregos da Antiguidade e, sem dúvida, o maior ícone do pensamento antigo. A sua vida e obra expandiram-se rápida e extensivamente por todo o mundo antigo, ajudado em parte pelo facto de ter sido tutor de Alexandre, o Grande, e foi uma força intelectual reconhecida e celebrada durante toda a Antiguidade e a Idade Média. Para além disso, depois de Aristóteles, o pensamento grego e a influência política começaram a declinar rapidamente e o cultivo do conhecimento, tão importante durante o período clássico, começou lenta mas seguramente a desaparecer, fazendo de Aristóteles o último dos grandes filósofos da Grécia antiga.
