Congress swiftly enacted the Defense of Marriage Act, defining marriage as between a man and a woman, and many states followed suit. Almost a decade before the Hawaii court issued its decision, however, several courts in multiple states had granted gay and lesbian couples co-parenting status, permitting each individual in the couple to be legally recognized as joint parents over their children. By 2006, advocates in half the states had secured court decisions supporting gay and lesbian co-parenting, and incurred far fewer public reprisals than on the marriage front.

What accounts for the stark difference in reactions to two contemporaneous same-sex family policy fights? In Below the Radar, Alison Gash argues that advocacy visibility has played a significant role in determining whether advocacy efforts become mired in conflict or bypass hostile backlash politics. Same-sex parenting advocates are not alone in crafting low-visibility advocacy strategies to ward off opposition efforts. Those who operate, reside in, and advocate for group homes serving individuals with disabilities have also used below-the-radar strategies to diminish the damage cause by NIMBY ("not in my back yard") responses to their requests to move into single-family neighborhoods. Property owners have resorted to slander, subterfuge, or even arson to discourage group homes from locating in their neighborhoods, and for some advocates, secrecy provides the best elixir.

Belém é uma das cidades mais antigas do mundo, tendo sido conquistada e governada por Caananitas, Judeus, Romanos, Árabes, Cruzados, Mamelucos do Egito e Otomanos. Os britânicos tomaram Belém durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial e controlaram a cidade de 1920 a 1948 e, na sequência da guerra de 1948 entre Israel e os seus vizinhos, a Jordânia anexou Belém e controlou-a até à Guerra dos Seis Dias em 1967. Foi durante a Guerra dos Seis Dias que Israel assumiu o controlo de Belém, permanecendo no poder sobre a cidade até 1995, quando, em conformidade com os Acordos de Paz de Oslo, o controlo da cidade e da Cisjordânia circundante foi entregue à Autoridade Nacional Palestiniana. Os palestinianos continuam a administrar os assuntos de Belém até aos dias de hoje. O que é que fez com que esta pequena e despretensiosa povoação fosse o centro de tanta atenção e conflito?

A principal razão pela qual Belém é tão famosa atualmente são as passagens bíblicas que referem a cidade como o local de nascimento de Jesus Cristo. Para além disso, a igreja cristã mais antiga do mundo, continuamente utilizada, é a Igreja da Natividade, em Belém. Tal como a própria cidade, a Igreja da Natividade passou por numerosos ciclos de criação e ruína. Construída sobre a Gruta da Natividade pela mãe do imperador Constantino, Helena, em maio de 339, a igreja existiu durante quase dois séculos antes de ser destruída durante a revolta samaritana em 529 d.C. A igreja foi mais tarde reconstruída pelo imperador bizantino Justiniano em 565, e é esta estrutura que sobreviveu em grande parte até aos dias de hoje. Hoje, a Igreja da Natividade é Património Mundial da UNESCO, ao longo da rota de peregrinação que ligava Belém a Jerusalém.
A igreja e o complexo de conventos, mosteiros e capelas que a rodeiam têm um aspeto de fortaleza, reflectindo a história turbulenta não só de Belém, mas também das comunidades religiosas ligadas ao local. Foi um ponto focal nos conflitos das Cruzadas e, tal como muitas outras cidades da Terra Santa, entrou em declínio depois de os exércitos europeus terem sido forçados a abandonar a Terra Santa.
A cidade de Nazaré, situada na Galileia, no norte de Israel, é hoje um agitado povoado com mais de 60.000 habitantes. Mas há mais de 2000 anos era uma aldeia insignificante com apenas algumas centenas de pessoas - na sua maioria agricultores e alguns trabalhadores que viajavam para as povoações romanas vizinhas em busca de emprego. No entanto, foi neste local improvável que a Sagrada Família viveu. Mais importante ainda é o facto de ter sido aqui que ocorreu a Anunciação, o momento em que o anjo Gabriel revelou a Maria que ela seria a mãe virgem de Jesus. Muitos também afirmam que Nazaré foi onde Jesus passou muitos dos seus anos de infância, aprendendo o ofício do seu pai, crescendo a frequentar os serviços da sinagoga local e desenvolvendo os fundamentos da sua fé.

Born in slavery, Charles Young (1864-1922) was the third black graduate of West Point, the first black U.S. military attaché, and the highest-ranking black officer in the Regular Army until his death. Unlike the two black graduates before him, Young went on to a long military career, eventually achieving the rank of colonel. After Young, racial intolerance closed the door to blacks at the academy, and forty-seven years passed before another African American graduated from West Point.

Brian G. Shellum's biography of Young's years at West Point chronicles the enormous challenges that Young faced and provides a valuable window into life at West Point in the 1880s. Academic difficulties, hazing, and social ostracism dogged him throughout his academy years. He succeeded through a combination of focused intellect, hard work, and a sense of humor. By graduation, he had made white friends, and his motivation and determination had won him the grudging respect of many of his classmates and professors.
Until now, scholars of African American and military history have neglected this important U.S. Army trailblazer.
