This study examines the enormous variation and complexity that characterize relationships between the national state and locally-based, often non-state actors who negotiate and compete for political authority in Burma's ethnic minority-dominated states along the borders. Three patterns of relationships are explored: devolution by the national state to warlord-like local authorities; occupation by the Burmese military; and coexistence (with varying degrees of cooperation and understanding) among actors from the national state and local stakeholders. Throughout these border states, leaders of the Burmese government's armed forces and of past and currently-active armed opposition forces operate within a context that is neither war nor peace, but instead a kind of post-civil-war, not-quite-peace environment. To understand the complex political arrangements that have arisen in this environment, this monograph employs the concept of "emerging political complex" - a set of adaptive networks that link state and other political authorities to domestic and foreign business concerns (some legal, others illegal), traditional indigenous leaders, religious authorities, overseas refugee and diaspora communities, political party leaders, and nongovernmental organizations. All of these players make rules, extract resources, provide protection, and try to order a moral universe, but none of them are able, or even inclined, to trump the others for monolithic national supremacy. Conflict resolution strategies have to recognize that these emerging political complexes are not simply unfortunate bumps in the road to peace but instead constitute intricate and evolving social systems that may continue to be adapted and sustained.

Attention to characterization through prototype also allows Joseph to identify differences between pre-exilic and exilic redactions in the Deuteronomistic History, bolstering and also revising the view advanced by Frank Moore Cross. The result is a deepened understanding of the worldview and theology of the Deuteronomistic Historians.

No século XXI, a maior parte das pessoas associa a ideia da possessão de uma pessoa ou de um local por uma entidade sobrenatural malévola ao mundo medieval e, em particular, à Igreja Católica, mas a verdade é consideravelmente mais estranha. Praticamente todas as culturas humanas que alguma vez existiram falaram de possessão e de exorcismo, um rito ou ritual utilizado para libertar uma pessoa ou um local da possessão. Os termos usados para descrever o processo de possessão e as entidades que se pensa serem responsáveis mudaram ao longo da história, mas a teoria central não mudou. Em certas circunstâncias, diz-se que uma pessoa, um lugar ou um objeto podem ser habitados por uma entidade que vem de outro lugar. O resultado é geralmente negativo e, por vezes, até fatal. O único remédio eficaz é o exorcismo, a expulsão da entidade envolvida para o local de onde veio.

Alguns ramos da psicologia moderna sugerem que a possessão é simplesmente uma forma de doença mental e que todos estes casos podem ser explicados em termos psicológicos. Mas, como verá, parece haver uma consistência notável nos relatos de possessões e mesmo nos relatos de testemunhas de pessoas possuídas que demonstram poderes e capacidades notáveis. É difícil explicar essas coisas puramente em termos de psicologia.
Além disso, embora as pessoas possam associar a possessão e o exorcismo ao passado, particularmente ao mundo medieval, as alegações aumentaram dramaticamente nos últimos 50 anos. A situação tornou-se tão grave que, em 1990, um grupo de padres católicos romanos formou a Associação Internacional de Exorcistas (IAE). Este grupo pressionou o Vaticano a reconhecer o aumento de casos de possessão demoníaca e, em 2004, a Congregação para a Doutrina da Fé do Vaticano pediu a todas as dioceses católicas que nomeassem um exorcista com formação. É muito difícil obter números exactos (a Igreja Católica, por exemplo, não publica estatísticas oficiais sobre o número de exorcismos realizados pelos seus sacerdotes). O que se sabe é que a maior parte das grandes dioceses católicas da América do Norte têm acesso a exorcistas oficiais, e que estes padres recebem formação especializada para exercerem o ministério do exorcismo. Não há números oficiais disponíveis (a Igreja Católica não identifica os padres que actuam como exorcistas), mas acredita-se que em 2011, a Igreja Católica tinha cerca de 15 exorcistas treinados na América do Norte. Hoje, acredita-se que esse número seja bem superior a 100.
Talvez não por coincidência, as sondagens sugerem que a crença nos demónios e na possessão demoníaca também está a aumentar. Uma pesquisa realizada em 2019 na América descobriu que 22% dos entrevistados acreditavam que os demônios "definitivamente existem", enquanto outros 24% acreditam que tais entidades "provavelmente existem". Esses são números surpreendentes em uma nação moderna, industrializada e avançada. Algumas pessoas afirmam que a crença em demônios e possessão demoníaca nunca foi tão alta.
Naturalmente, esta crença crescente na possessão demoníaca também levou a um aumento do número de exorcismos que os padres e outros são chamados a realizar. Mais uma vez, não estão disponíveis números precisos, mas um exorcista de alto nível na América, o Padre Vincent Lampert, o exorcista da Arquidiocese de Indianápolis, disse a um repórter em outubro de 2018 que tinha recebido mais de 1.700 pedidos de exorcismos até à data desse ano, o número mais elevado que alguma vez tinha experimentado. Outros padres católicos treinados em ritos de exorcismo na América do Norte disseram que este aspeto do seu ministério se tornou tão avassalador que mal conseguem lidar com os pedidos de exorcismos.
Tudo isto torna claro que os conceitos de possessão demoníaca e exorcismo não são apenas tópicos de interesse para os historiadores, mas coisas que estão a afetar um número crescente de pessoas comuns em todo o mundo neste momento.
