Im 21.Jahrhundert verbinden die meisten Menschen die Vorstellung von der Besessenheit einer Person oder eines Ortes durch ein bösartiges übernatürliches Wesen mit der mittelalterlichen Welt und insbesondere mit der katholischen Kirche, aber die Wahrheit ist wesentlich seltsamer. Praktisch jede menschliche Kultur, die je existiert hat, hat sowohl von Besessenheit als auch von Exorzismus gesprochen, einem Ritus oder Ritual, das dazu dient, eine Person oder einen Ort von der Besessenheit zu befreien. Die Begriffe, die zur Beschreibung des Besessenheitsprozesses und der für die Besessenheit verantwortlichen Wesenheiten verwendet werden, haben sich im Laufe der Geschichte geändert, nicht aber die zentrale Theorie. Es heißt, dass eine Person, ein Ort oder ein Gegenstand unter bestimmten Umständen von einer Wesenheit bewohnt wird, die von einem anderen Ort kommt. Das Ergebnis ist im Allgemeinen negativ und manchmal sogar tödlich. Die einzige wirksame Abhilfe ist der Exorzismus, die Verbannung der betreffenden Wesenheit an den Ort, von dem sie stammt.
Einige Zweige der modernen Psychologie behaupten, dass Besessenheit einfach eine Form von Geisteskrankheit ist und dass alle diese Fälle psychologisch erklärt werden können. Aber, wie Sie sehen werden, scheint es eine bemerkenswerte Übereinstimmung in den Berichten über Besessenheit und sogar in den Zeugenberichten von besessenen Menschen zu geben, die bemerkenswerte Kräfte und Fähigkeiten zeigen. Es ist schwierig, diese Dinge allein mit psychologischen Begriffen zu erklären.
Auch wenn man Besessenheit und Exorzismus mit der Vergangenheit, insbesondere mit dem Mittelalter, in Verbindung bringt, haben die Klagen in den letzten 50 Jahren dramatisch zugenommen. Die Situation wurde so ernst, dass 1990 eine Gruppe römisch-katholischer Priester die Internationale Vereinigung der Exorzisten (IAE) gründete. Genaue Zahlen sind nur sehr schwer zu erhalten (die katholische Kirche veröffentlicht beispielsweise keine offiziellen Statistiken über die Zahl der von ihren Priestern durchgeführten Exorzismen). Bekannt ist, dass die meisten großen katholischen Diözesen in Nordamerika Zugang zu offiziellen Exorzisten haben und dass diese Priester eine spezielle Ausbildung erhalten, um den Exorzismusdienst zu übernehmen. Offizielle Zahlen liegen nicht vor (die katholische Kirche nennt keine Priester, die als Exorzisten tätig sind), aber man geht davon aus, dass die katholische Kirche im Jahr 2011 etwa 15 ausgebildete Exorzisten in Nordamerika hatte. Heute sollen es weit über 100 sein.
Vielleicht nicht zufällig deuten Umfragen darauf hin, dass auch der Glaube an Dämonen und dämonische Besessenheit zunimmt. Eine Umfrage, die 2019 in Amerika[2] durchgeführt wurde, ergab, dass 22 % der Befragten glauben, dass Dämonen "definitiv existieren", während weitere 24 % glauben, dass solche Wesen "wahrscheinlich existieren". Das sind schwindelerregende Zahlen in einer modernen, industrialisierten und fortschrittlichen Nation. Einige Leute behaupten, dass der Glaube an Dämonen und dämonische Besessenheit noch nie so groß war wie heute.
Natürlich hat dieser zunehmende Glaube an dämonische Besessenheit auch zu einem Anstieg der Zahl der Exorzismen geführt, zu denen Priester und andere berufen werden. Auch hier sind keine genauen Zahlen verfügbar, aber ein bekannter Exorzist in Amerika, Pater Vincent Lampert, der Exorzist der Erzdiözese Indianapolis, sagte einem Reporter im Oktober 2018, dass er in diesem Jahr bisher über 1.700 Anfragen für Exorzismen erhalten habe, die höchste Zahl, die er je erlebt habe.

Originally developed according to a purely mono-centric structure, which grew radio-centrically with the progressive addition of satellite urban areas, Mediterranean cities have more recently oriented their growth path towards dispersed settlement models. This resulted in a high consumption of land, in contrast with the 'judicious compactness' that characterized the tumultuous development of the cities at least in the first three decades after World War II. This book tells, through narratives, photographs, qualitative-quantitative descriptions of landscapes, maps and indicators, the transition from a compact model-`judiciously mono-centric' and `land saving'-to contemporary sprawl, with practical implications in economic geography. The environmental, social and economic implications of this phenomenon, far from being a unique characteristic of the European Mediterranean region, have been also discussed, and the planning and policy implications addressed with respect to the individual ecological problems faced from time to time.
