In spite of widespread assumptions that young people on the autism spectrum have a "natural" attraction to technology-a premise that leads to significant speculation about how media helps or harms them-relatively little research actually exists about their everyday tech use. In Kids Across the Spectrums, Meryl Alper fills this gap with the first book-length ethnography of the digital lives of autistic young people. Based on research with more than sixty neurodivergent children from an array of racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, Kids Across the Spectrums delves into three overlapping areas of their media usage: cultural belonging, social relationships, and physical embodiment.
Alper's work demonstrates that what autistic youth do with technology is not radically different from their non-autistic peers. However, significant social and health inequalities-including limited recreational programs, unsafe neighborhoods, and challenges obtaining appropriate therapeutic services-spill over into their media habits. With an emphasis on what autistic children bring to media as opposed to what they supposedly lack socially, Alper argues that their relationships do not exist outside of how communication technologies affect sociality, nor beyond the boundaries of stigmatization and society writ large. Finally, she offers practical suggestions for the education, healthcare, and technology sectors to promote equity, inclusion, access, and justice for autistic kids at home, at school, and in their communities.

Koreo-Japonica: A Re-evaluation of a Common Genetic Origin By Alexander Vovin

The Japonic (Japanese and Ryukyuan) portmanteau language family and the Korean language have long been considered isolates on the fringe of northeast Asia. Although in the last fifty years many specialists in Japonic and Korean historical linguistics have voiced their support for a genetic relationship between the two, this concept has not been endorsed by general historical linguists and no significant attempts have been made to advance beyond the status quo. Alexander Vovin, a longtime advocate of the genetic relationship view, engaged in a reanalysis of the known data in the hope of finding evidence in support of this position. In the process of his work, however, he became convinced that the multiple similarities between Japonic and Korean are the result of several centuries of contact and do not descend from a hypothetical common ancestor. In Koreo-Japonica, Vovin carefully reviews recent advances in the reconstruction of both language families. His detailed analysis of most of the morphological and lexical comparisons offered so far shows that whenever the proposed comparisons are not due to pure chance, they can almost always be explained as borrowings from Korean into a central group of Japanese dialects from roughly between the third and eighth centuries A.D. The remaining group of lexical (but not morphological) comparisons that cannot be explained in this way is, he argues, too small to serve as proof of even a distant genetic relationship. In this volume, a leading historical linguist presents a significant challenge to a view widely held by Japonic and Korean historical linguistics on the relationship between the two language families and offers material support for the skepticism long espoused by general historical linguists on the matter. His findings will both challenge and illuminate issues of interest to all linguists working with language contact and typology as well as those concerned with the prehistory and early history of East Asia.

Los intentos europeos de apaciguarle, sobre todo en Munich en 1938, fracasaron, y la Alemania nazi se tragó Austria y Checoslovaquia en 1939. Italia también estaba en marcha e invadió Albania en abril de 1939. Sin embargo, la gota que colmó el vaso fue la invasión alemana de Polonia el 1 de septiembre de ese año. Dos días después, Francia y Gran Bretaña declararon la guerra a Alemania, y la Segunda Guerra Mundial había comenzado en serio.

En particular, la campaña de Polonia se recuerda como una en la que un anticuado ejército polaco fue rápidamente vapuleado por el ejército más moderno del mundo. La única imagen de la invasión nazi-soviética de Polonia en 1939 que permanece en el imaginario popular es la de unos lanceros polacos cargando en un valeroso pero estúpido ataque contra los tanques alemanes. Originada como una pieza de propaganda nazi, paradójicamente adoptada por los polacos como un mito patriótico, la carga ficticia oculta los acontecimientos reales de septiembre de 1939. Superado en número, armamento y equipamiento, el ejército polaco infligió grandes pérdidas a la Wehrmacht invasora. De hecho, sólo el inesperado avance de las fuerzas soviéticas desde el este puso fin rápidamente a la lucha y vio cómo la república polaca volvía a dividirse tras sólo 20 años de independencia. No obstante, la campaña que dio comienzo a la Segunda Guerra Mundial fue una sangrienta señal de lo que estaba por venir, ya que el conflicto se extendió por todo el mundo.
Sin embargo, hoy en día se pasa por alto el hecho de que, a medida que el poder de la Alemania nazi crecía de forma alarmante durante la década de 1930, los franceses buscaron medios para defender su territorio de la creciente amenaza del Reich de los Mil Años. Como artífices de las medidas más punitivas del Tratado de Versalles tras la Primera Guerra Mundial, Francia era un objetivo natural de las represalias teutonas, por lo que la Línea Maginot, una serie de puntos fuertes y fortificaciones interconectadas que recorrían gran parte de la frontera oriental francesa, ayudó a disipar los temores franceses de invasión.
La leyenda popular de la Línea Maginot retrata las defensas fronterizas como un inútil proyecto de "elefante blanco" que fue impulsado por un grave error de comprensión de las nuevas realidades de la guerra a mediados del siglo XX y rápidamente desbordado por el contundente avance de la blitzkrieg alemana. La jerga inglesa invoca hoy esta visión de la Línea Maginot como metáfora de cualquier medida defensiva en la que se cree firmemente pero que en realidad es inútil. De hecho, expresiones como "mentalidad de la Línea Maginot", que describe una mentalidad excesivamente defensiva y reactiva, perpetúan la leyenda. Como escribió un autor francés y enlace militar con los británicos, André Maurois, sobre su desilusión con la línea defensiva que en un principio apoyó con entusiasmo: "Ahora sabemos que el complejo de la línea Maginot era una peligrosa enfermedad de la mente; pero publico esto tal como fue escrito en enero de 1940".
En realidad, sin embargo, la Línea Maginot real demostró ser considerablemente más funcional de lo que ha servido la memoria . El verdadero fallo de la estrategia militar francesa durante los primeros días de la Segunda Guerra Mundial no residía en la confianza en las fortificaciones Maginot, sino en la negligencia del ejército a la hora de exDescriptionar las oportunidades militares que la Línea creaba. En otras palabras, la defensa fronteriza funcionó según lo previsto, pero las demás armas militares no la apoyaron lo suficiente como para detener a los alemanes. En el año 427 a.C., la antigua ciudad-estado griega de Atenas florecía. Unos 80 años antes, los atenienses habían formado la primera democracia autorrepresentativa de la historia, la Guerra del Peloponeso contra Esparta acababa de comenzar y Sócrates empezaba a sentar las bases de lo que sería la filosofía occidental. Ninguna de las obras de Sócrates sobrevivió a la Antigüedad, por lo que la mayor parte de lo que se sabe sobre él procede de los escritos de sus seguidores, entre los que destaca Platón. Lo que se sabe de Sócrates es que parecía hacer carrera en la filosofía, y Platón quería seguir sus pasos. Sin embargo, a pesar de la influencia de la vida de Sócrates en sus seguidores, fue la muerte de Sócrates en torno al año 399 a.C. lo que realmente les marcó. A pesar de que Aristóteles insistía en que Sócrates sólo se preocupaba por la ética y no sostenía ninguna teoría metafísica del tipo que proponía Platón, el intento de leer al feo pero sabio Sócrates a través de los diálogos platónicos continuó hasta el siglo XX. El cambio de tono, estilo y temas filosóficos parecía ser un gran argumento a favor de que los puntos de vista socráticos se encuentran en las primeras obras platónicas, mientras que las obras posteriores llevan el sello de los puntos de vista personales de Platón. El erudito platónico Gregory Vlastos introdujo una posición desarrollista que casi se ha convertido en una ortodoxia en los estudios platónicos, al trasladar la discusión desde el Sócrates histórico a Platón como filósofo. Según el desarrollismo, si los puntos de vista del diálogo no se exponen sólo para ser refutados después, entonces la persona a la que deben atribuirse es Platón y no Sócrates. Aproximadamente una década después de la muerte de Sócrates, Platón regresó a Atenas y fundó su famosa Academia Platónica alrededor del año 387 a.C., que supervisó durante 40 años hasta su muerte. Una de las creencias filosóficas de Platón era que escribir las enseñanzas era menos valioso que transmitirlas oralmente, y varios de los escritos de Platón son respuestas a escritos suyos anteriores, por lo que es difícil discernir las creencias personales de Platón. Sin embargo, Platón educó a varios filósofos posteriores, el principal de ellos Aristóteles, y sus escritos acabaron formando la columna vertebral de la filosofía occidental.
Junto a Sócrates y Platón, Aristóteles es, sin duda, uno de los filósofos griegos antiguos más influyentes y posiblemente el mayor icono del pensamiento antiguo. Su vida y su obra se extendieron rápida y ampliamente por todo el mundo antiguo, ayudado en parte por el hecho de que fue tutor de Alejandro Magno, fue una fuerza intelectual reconocida y celebrada durante toda la Antigüedad y la Edad Media. Además, después de Aristóteles, el pensamiento y la influencia política griegos iniciaron un rápido declive, y el cultivo del conocimiento, tan importante durante el periodo clásico, comenzó a desvanecerse lenta pero inexorablemente, convirtiendo a Aristóteles en el último de los grandes filósofos de la antigua Grecia.
