Our story starts in Mesopotamia, source of the earliest preserved illustrations of half-human, half-fish creatures. The myths and legends of the Mesopotamians were incorporated and adopted by ancient Greek, Etruscan and Roman cultures. Then, during the early medieval period, ancient mythological creatures such as mermaids were confused, transformed and reinterpreted by Christian tradition to begin a new strand in mermaid lore. Along the way, all manner of stunning-and sometimes bizarre or unsettling-depictions of mermaids emerged. Written in an accessible and entertaining style, this book challenges conventional views of mermaid mythology, discusses mermaids in the light of evolutionary theory and aims to inspire future studies of these most curious of imaginary creatures.

For the last three hundred years, fictions of the vampire have fed off anxieties about cultural continuity. Though commonly represented as a parasitic aggressor from without, the vampire is in fact a native of Europe, and its "metamorphoses," to quote Baudelaire, a distorted image of social transformation. Because the vampire grows strong whenever and wherever traditions weaken, its representations have multiplied with every political, economic, and technological revolution from the eighteenth century on. Today, in the age of globalization, vampire fictions are more virulent than ever, and the monster enjoys hunting grounds as vast as the international market.
Metamorphoses of the Vampire explains why representations of vampirism began in the eighteenth century, flourished in the nineteenth, and came to eclipse nearly all other forms of monstrosity in the early twentieth century. Many of the works by French and German authors discussed here have never been presented to students and scholars in the English-speaking world. While there are many excellent studies that examine Victorian vampires, the undead in cinema, contemporary vampire fictions, and the vampire in folklore, until now no work has attempted to account for the unifying logic that underlies the vampire's many and often apparently contradictory forms.

Am 17. Juni 1991 unterzeichneten die Außenminister Polens und Deutschlands in Bonn den deutsch-polnischen Nachbarschaftsvertrag, nachdem einige Monate zuvor, am 11. November 1990, beide Regierungen den Grenzvertrag über die Oder-Neiße-Grenze als westliche Grenze Polens geschlossen hatten. Im Nachbarschaftsvertrag wurden erstmals nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg die Rechte der deutschen Volksgruppe genauer festgehalten, freilich ohne jede Andeutung, daß die Minderheitenschutzverpflichtung Ergebnis der Übernahme von Territorien mit fremdnationaler Bevölkerung sei. Zugleich begab sich Polen auf den Weg in die europäische Rechts- und Wertegemeinschaft, was vor allem mit der Akzeptanz der Europäischen Menschenrechtskonvention 1993, aber auch im 2004 vollzogenen Beitritt zur Europäischen Union sichtbar wurde. Die Praxis zeigt freilich, daß beim Schutz der Menschenrechte und Minderheiten im östlichen Europa auch heute noch Probleme bestehen.Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes versuchen, sich diesem Themenspektrum aus ganz unterschiedlicher Richtung zu nähern. Der Minderheitenschutz (nicht nur) im östlichen Europa, vor allem aber in Polen, wird aus wechselnden Perspektiven erörtert und durch eine Dokumentation des 2005 verabschiedeten polnischen Minderheitengesetzes ergänzt. Der zentrale Aufsatz behandelt die Entwicklungen hin zur Entstehung des Nachbarschaftsvertrages von 1991, während andere Beiträge menschen- und eigentumsrechtlichen Fragestellungen bezogen auf Polen, Weißrußland und darüber hinaus gewidmet sind.
