The Little Guide to Writing for Impact: How to Communicate Research in a Way that People Will Read by Katherine Barrett, Richard Greene, Donald F. Kettl
English | March 12, 2024 | ISBN: 1538181266 | 140 pages | MOBI | 3.69 Mb
Everyone who writes in the world of public affairs wants to make arguments that will move readers and shape policy. That world, however, is busy and noisy, and even the best ideas often get squeezed out in the frenetic pace of policy debates. No author wants that to happen to their hard work.

In this fresh and lively book, Barrett, Greene, and Kettl combine more than a century of experience in writing to present a series of guidelines that will enable readers to successfully frame a policy argument; pitch it to editors; organize the work so that the ideas have real impact; support it with data and stories; find the right ✅Publisher; and follow up after publication to ensure that the argument has enduring impact. These basic steps work well-but work differently-for a wide variety of policy writing, from short blog posts through an op-eds, commentaries and policy briefs, dissertations, articles for both the popular press and academic journals, and books.
The book is a handy manual for writers in the world of research who want to explore the start-to-finish process of writing for impact-and for authors who want to explore a single writing challenge in-depth. It is full of examples of both good and bad writing, as well as the authors' own tales in navigating the road from a new idea to a written product that packs punch. It's a fun and useful primer for steering the policy debate.

The Living Galaxy: Winners and Losers in the Milky Way
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031673239 | 268 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 54 MB
This book describes the possible distribution of life in the Milky Way. Our description is mathematical in order to be extrapolated from what we know that happened on Earth to what might have happened on the huge number of extrasolar planets existing in the Milky Way Galaxy. We use the statistical Drake equation, which identifies parameters for calculating the total number of life forms at all levels. While the original Drake equation (1961) contained seven factors only, we extend the number of factors to 50, thus incorporating much of the scientific knowledge about the Evolution of Life available in 2024.

The Living Medicine: How phages will save us when antibiotics fail, UK Edition
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1785307231 | 320 pages | PDF | 5 Mb
The fascinating and dramatic story of a forgotten, life-saving cure to conquer deadly bacterial infections - bacteriophages - and the remarkable scientists behind them

When antibiotics started to fail the race to save humanity from deadly antibiotic resistant infections began. Science journalist Lina Zeldovich reveals the remarkable history of bacteriophages or 'phages', through the colourful lives of the British, French, Soviet and American scientists who discovered, developed and are now reviving this unique living medicine for seemingly incurable diseases.
Starting with the original discovery of bacteriophages, or 'phages', in 1917, Zeldovich reveals how they were all but forgotten as antibiotics rose to medical stardom in the West and Stalin purged leading scientists behind them in the former Soviet Union. It was only when patients started dying from antibiotic resistant infections that those scientists who fled the former Soviet Union realised their unique knowledge of phages presented a safe and effective solution for the future of humanity. Today new work has begun to develop this cure to safeguard our future.
Eye-opening, gripping and impeccably researched, The Living Medicine is a remarkable portrayal of how curiosity, bravery and collaboration seeded one of the most important scientific discoveries of our time.

The Logic of the Third: A Paradigm Shift to a Shared Future for Humanity
English | 2023 | ISBN: 9811261016 | 315 Pages | PDF (True) | 18 MB
This book is a scientific basis for understanding the urgent need for a Great Transformation to a third step in social evolution. Already being a community of common destiny, humanity can form an actual unity through diversity to avoid extinction. Social actors can recognise informational imperatives for cognition, communication and co-operation to achieve such a unity. By doing so, they apply a logic that underlies the structuration of any agency, which is a real logic of self-organising systems from the physical to the social. This logic is the Logic of the Third - the Third is a meta-structure that emerges in a leap. The agents interact and when they co-act they are likely to form a real meta-structure of organisational relations. Informational agents anticipate this by generating requisite information in their attempt to cope with complex challenges. Such an information is a meta-structure too. The Third helps achieve synergy effects.

Nazila Fathi, "The Lonely War: One Woman's Account of the Struggle for Modern Iran"
English | ISBN: 0465069991 | 2014 | 336 pages | AZW3 | 1153 KB
In the summer of 2009, as she was covering the popular uprisings in Tehran for the New York Times, Iranian journalist Nazila Fathi received a phone call. "They have given your photo to snipers," a government source warned her. Soon after, with undercover agents closing in, Fathi fled the country with her husband and two children, beginning a life of exile.

In The Lonely War, Fathi interweaves her story with that of the country she left behind, showing how Iran is locked in a battle between hardliners and reformers that dates back to the country's 1979 revolution. Fathi was nine years old when that uprising replaced the Iranian shah with a radical Islamic regime. Her father, an official at a government ministry, was fired for wearing a necktie and knowing English; to support his family he was forced to labor in an orchard hundreds of miles from Tehran. At the same time, the family's destitute, uneducated housekeeper was able to retire and purchase a modern apartment - all because her family supported the new regime.
As Fathi shows, changes like these caused decades of inequality - especially for the poor and for women - to vanish overnight. Yet a new breed of tyranny took its place, as she discovered when she began her journalistic career. Fathi quickly confronted the upper limits of opportunity for women in the new Iran and earned the enmity of the country's ruthless intelligence service. But while she and many other Iranians have fled for the safety of the West, millions of their middleclass countrymen - many of them the same people whom the regime once lifted out of poverty - continue pushing for more personal freedoms and a renewed relationship with the outside world.
Drawing on over two decades of reporting and extensive interviews with both ordinary Iranians and high-level officials before and since her departure, Fathi describes Iran's awakening alongside her own, revealing how moderates are steadily retaking the country.

The Long-Distance Leader, Second Edition: Revised Rules for Remarkable Remote and Hybrid Leadership (The Long-Distance Worklife Series) by Kevin Eikenberry, Wayne Turmel
English | September 17, 2024 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0D36XKLWP | 256 pages | EPUB | 1.36 Mb
The new edition of this internationally acclaimed guide to remote and hybrid leadership comes with an updated and enriched framework for the modern workplace. It introduces new principles and retains proven strategies for effective leadership across distances.

When The Long-Distance Leader was first published, it was pre-pandemic and remote work was in its infancy with 30% of managers leading at a distance-now that number is well over 50%.
As more organizations adopt a remote workforce, the challenges of leading at a distance become more urgent than ever. The cofounders of the Remote Leadership Institute, Kevin Eikenberry and Wayne Turmel, show leaders how to guide their teams by recalling the foundational principles of leadership whether their teams are remote, hybrid, co-working, or something entirely new!
The authors' "Three-O" Model refocuses leaders to think about outcomes, others, and ourselves-elements of leadership that remain unchanged, whether employees are down the hall or halfway around the world. By pairing it with the Remote Leadership Model, which emphasizes using technology as a tool and not a distraction, leaders can navigate the terrain of managing teams wherever they are.
This second edition features updated exercises that ensure projects stay on track, keep productivity and morale high, and build lasting relationships, along with a new chapter on hybrid workplaces.

The Lost and the Found: A True Story of Homelessness, Found Family, and Second Chances by Kevin Fagan
English | February 11, 2025 | ISBN: 1668017113 | 288 pages | EPUB | 7.19 Mb
In the tradition of Stephanie Land and Matthew Desmond, a powerful and deeply reported narrative of homelessness, despair, and hope.

Kevin Fagan's The Lost and the Found, set in San Francisco-one of the wealthiest cities in America-takes an empathic, character-driven approach to exploring the human side of what's behind the homelessness epidemic.
An award-winning journalist and Pulitzer Prize nominee who has covered homelessness for decades and spent extensive time on the streets for his reporting, Fagan experienced it himself as a young man and brings a deep understanding to the crisis. He introduces us to Rita and Tyson, telling the deeply moving story of two unhoused people rescued by their families with the help of Fagan's reporting, and their struggle to pull themselves out of homelessness and addiction, ending with both enormous tragedy and triumph.
But The Lost and the Found is not just a story of individuals experiencing homelessness, it is also a compellinglook at the link between homelessness and addiction, and an incisive commentary on housing and equality. Fagan shines a sharp light on this national calamity, and in sharing Rita and Tyson's stories, The Lost and the Found has the potential to change the way we see and help the homeless.

The Lost Chapel of Westminster: How a Royal Chapel Became the House of Commons by John Cooper
English | January 7, 2025 | ISBN: 1801104514 | 272 pages | PDF | 20 Mb
The fascinating history of St Stephen's Chapel in the Palace of Westminster, a building at the heart of British life for over 700 years.

Begun in 1292, the royal chapel of St Stephen was the crowning glory of the old palace of Westminster - a place of worship for kings and a showcase of the finest architecture, ritual and music the Plantagenets could muster. But in 1548, as the Protestant Reformation reached its height, St Stephen's was given a new purpose as the House of Commons. Burned out in the great palace fire of 1834, the Commons chamber was then recreated on a remarkably similar medieval design, perpetuating a way of doing politics that is recognisable to this day.
St Stephen's has been part of many lives over the centuries, from the medieval masons who worked through the Black Death to complete the chapel, to the generations of MPs who locked horns in the Commons chamber. Threading together religion, politics, art, architecture and narrative history, John Cooper tells the story of the lost chapel, an iconic building that reflects the national transition from medieval divine-right monarchy to modern parliamentary democracy.

Denise George, "The Lost Eleven: The Forgotten Story of Black American Soldiers Brutally Massacred in World War II"
English | ISBN: 1101987391 | 2017 | 416 pages | AZW3 | 4 MB
Nearly forgotten by history, this is the story of the Wereth Eleven, African-American soldiers who fought courageously for freedom in WWII-only to be ruthlessly executed by Nazi troops during the Battle of the Bulge.

Their story was almost forgotten by history. Now known as the Wereth Eleven, these brave African-American soldiers left their homes to join the Allied effort on the front lines of WWII. As members of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion, they provided crucial fire support at the Siege of Bastogne. Among the few who managed to escape the Nazi's devastating Ardennes Offensive, they found refuge in the small village of Wereth, Belgium. A farmer and supporter of the Allies took the exhausted and half-starved men into his home. When Nazi authorities learned of their whereabouts, they did not take the soldiers prisoner, but subjected them to torture and execution in a nearby field.
Despite their bravery and sacrifice, these eleven soldiers were omitted from the final Congressional War Crimes report of 1949. For seventy years, their files-marked secret-gathered dust in the National Archive. But in 1994, at the site of their execution, a memorial was dedicated to the Wereth Eleven and all African-American soldiers who fought in Europe.
Drawing on firsthand interviews with family members and fellow soldiers,

The Madness of Courage
by Tony Insall

English | January 9, 2025 | ISBN: 1785909592 | 352 Pages | True epub | 6,76 MB

Group Captain Gilbert Insall holds a unique record: he is the only person to have both won a Victoria Cross and escaped successfully from a German prisoner of war camp during the First World War. The Madness of Courage describes how, when forced down by engine damage after destroying a German fighter, Gilbert ignored intensive shelling in order to repair his aircraft and return to base. But a few weeks later, he was shot down and captured. And thus began a distinguished career in prison breaking. He tunnelled out of Heidelberg prison camp and later hid among boxes on a horse-drawn cart to get away from Crefeld, each time being recaptured. Then, in Ströhen, Gilbert and several companions concealed themselves in a claustrophobically small space they had excavated under the floor of the bathhouse. They remained there for seventeen hours, while a fruitless search for them was carried out, and eventually emerged and successfully reached Holland. Meticulously told by Gilbert's great-nephew, the critically acclaimed intelligence historian Tony Insall, The Madness of Courage is a gripping true story about a remarkable man at a time before the Geneva Convention was signed, when conditions for prisoners of war were often appalling and the British War Office did little to help prisoners escape. Instead, Gilbert's family, assisted by French intelligence, gave him the support he needed to break out of captivity in an extraordinary feat of bravery, resilience and ingenuity.

David Vital, "The Making of British Foreign Policy"
English | 2021 | ISBN: 1032125195, 103212511X | EPUB | pages: 2468 | 0.3 mb
How is foreign policy made? Who makes it? To what conscious and unconscious influences are policy-makers subject? What is distinctive about the immensely complex process as it unfolds in Britain? And what, therefore, is distinctive and characteristic about Britain's foreign policy today? Who in Britain, has the decisive word? Why is the Foreign Office the king-pin of the system? Why does Parliament count for so little? Does public opinion count at all? Originally published in 1968, these are some of the questions which this book considers in the course of a tightly argued but very readable analysis. Some had been considered on their own elsewhere, but this study represented the first attempt by a contemporary political scientist to pull together, in brief compass, all the relevant threads - including the constitutional, the political, the institutional and the sociological. It is done, moreover, on the basis of a sharp assessment of the type of foreign policy problem that most notably confronted Britain at the time.

The author has been successively journalist, official of the Israel Government, and university lecturer in politics. Throughout, his special interests and activities have been in the sphere of international affairs and it was while teaching International Relations at the University of Sussex that he wrote this book. He combines the experience of one who has seen the policy being made from the inside with the theoretical insight of the political scientist; he assesses with a sympathetic but unemotional detachment the constraints on the formation of British foreign policy.
