Der erste Teil der Studien enthalt eine grundlegende Arbeit uber "Helmuth Plessner. Philosoph und Soziologe-Wissenschaft als Beruf in der Endzeit des burgerlichen Humanismus", an der Christian von Ferber bis ins hohe Alter geschrieben hat und deren Diskussion noch aussteht. Im zweiten Teil der Studien stellt von Ferber seinen Werdegang in der Nachkriegszeit unter dem Einfluss und in den Kreisen von Helmuth Plessner und anderen Lehrmeistern bis hin zum Professor der Soziologie dar. Drei Orientierungen ist er gefolgt: Wissenschaft ist mehr als der Erwerb methodischer und theoretischer Kompetenz. Skepsis ist gegenuber Aussagen angebracht, die keinen Bezug zur primaren Wirklichkeit herstellen konnen, und Wissenschaft ist auf die Werte des menschlichen Lebens bezogen. Grundsatzliche Uberlegungen zum freiheitssichernden Charakter der Soziologie und zu zentralen Fragen der Gesundheitspolitik und Sozialmedizin beleuchten das Lebenswerk von Christian von Ferber und die Aktualitat seiner Fragestellungen.
