Ivan Kapitonov, "A Grammar of Kunbarlang "
English | ISBN: 3110741245 | 2021 | 407 pages | EPUB | 6 MB
This is a comprehensive linguistic description of Kunbarlang (Gunbalang), a highly endangered polysynthetic language of northern Australia. Kunbarlang belongs to the non-Pama-Nyungan Gunwinyguan language family and is currently spoken by nearly 40 people. This work draws on elicitations and analysis of narratives from the author's original field work (2015-2018), as well as those from previous recordings.

The main areas covered are the sound system, morphology, syntax, and aspects of lexical and constructional semantics. Dictated by the polysynthetic structure of the language and the patterns of its use, the principal focus of the work is the analysis of the verbal complex and the interaction between the verb and other constituents of the clause. The analysis strike a balance between taking into consideration the areal and genetic context, being informed by linguistic typology and theory, yet at the same time remaining data-driven and theory-neutral in the way generalisations are stated. Against the Australian and a broader cross-linguistic background, Kunbarlang possesses remarkable features at all levels of its organisation.

Thomas Ennever, "A Grammar of Ngardi: As spoken by F. Tjama, M. Yinjuru Bumblebee, D. Mungkirna Rockman, P. Yalurrngali Rockman, Y. Nampi"
English | ISBN: 3110752328 | 2021 | 795 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
Ngardi is a highly endangered language with fewer than 10 remaining speakers and is no longer being acquired by children. Despite the limited circulation of a draft dictionary (Cataldi, 2011), there has been no published reference grammar of this language. Upon publication, this work will constitute the most comprehensive grammar of any Ngumpin-Yapa language.

The Ngardi language exhibits many of the same typologically interesting features first identified in the related language Warlpiri―namely phenomena of non-configurational syntax and null anaphora. This grammar also brings to light a number of unique properties which will be of interest to linguistic typologists and formal theorists. The registration of arguments both through case marking on free NPs as well as in pronominal enclitics is similar to Warlpiri but differs in its detail―particularly in the ability to register various non-core cases (e.g. locative and allative) as 'arguments' in the pronominal complex. Within the verbal system, Ngardi is notably for a large number of verbal inflections (~20) which mark various distinctions in tense, aspect and mood, as well as associated motion and speaker-centric directionality. Ngardi exhibits a highly articulated system of complex predication, covering both complex verb and serial verb constructions. Other typologically interesting aspects of the language include the presence of dedicated apprehensional constructions and interesting interactions between negation and clausal modality.

Wiktor Gębski, "A Grammar of the Jewish Arabic Dialect of Gabes"
English | ISBN: 1805112511 | 2024 | 530 pages | PDF | 9 MB
This volume undertakes a linguistic exploration of the endangered Arabic dialect spoken by the Jews of Gabes, a coastal city situated in Southern Tunisia. Belonging to the category of sedentary North African dialects, this variety is now spoken by a dwindling number of native speakers, primarily in Israel and France.Given the imminent extinction faced by many modern varieties of Judaeo-Arabic, including Jewish Gabes, the study's primary goal is to document and describe its linguistic nuances while reliable speakers are still accessible. Data for this comprehensive study were collected during fieldwork in Israel and France between December 2018 and March 2022.The volume's primary objective is a meticulous comparative analysis of Jewish Gabes, with a special emphasis on syntax, aiming to discern unique linguistic features through comparison with other North African dialects. The results of the study suggest that the Jewish dialect of Gabes emerged in the first wave of the Arab conquest of the Maghreb, thus exhibiting features that set it apart from its Muslim counterpart. This old variety therefore has the potential to provide invaluable information on the formation of Maghrebi Arabic and the mechanisms of language contact in the pre-Islamic Maghreb. The volume is organised in three main sections: phonology, morphology, and syntax, with the syntax section adopting historical and typological perspectives to shed light on this linguistic terra incognita.

Raphael Rupert, "A Hidden World"
English | 2020 | ASIN: B084BV1C4F, B0026DZ25M | EPUB | pages: 183 | 0.6 mb
A Hidden World, first published in 1963, recounts the nine years spent by Hungarian Raphael Rupert in the prison camps of Soviet Russia-the Gulag. At the time of his arrest in 1947, Rupert was working from the British Embassy in Budapest. His trial, based on a presumed confession of acting as a spy, ended in his sentence to Camp 10 for 25 years of 'forced labor.' A Hidden World describes the daily life and endless brutalities endured in the camps...the numbing winter cold, the mindless drudgery in the factories, the harsh treatment by guards and prison gangs, the lack of food and medical care. Finally, after nine years, Rupert was released and able to emigrate to Great Britain, eventually settling in Ireland.

Lisa Merkel-Holguin, "A History of Child Welfare"
English | 1995 | ISBN: 1560008660 | EPUB | pages: 320 | 1.0 mb
As we approach the year 2000, infant mortality rates, child placement dilemmas, and appropriate socialization of children continue to challenge the field of child welfare. It is thus especially significant to reflect on the history of child welfare. The carefully selected topics explored in this volume underscore the importance of recovering past events and themes still relevant. It is the aim of this volume to illumine current issues by a review of past struggles and problems. A History of Child Welfare offers many examples of practices that have direct import for those who struggle to support children. Who is not bothered by what seem to be increasing acts of violence by children against children? The role of hidden cruelty to children in perpetuating violence is illuminated by studying the past. Historians and social researchers have gone far in examining the family, and by implication, their revelations greatly increase society's complex responses to children over time from early assumptions that children were little more than miniature adults to the discovery of childhood as a special developmental period. At the start of this century women still did not have universal suffrage and brutal child labor was not unusual. Harsh legal codes separating the races were widespread, and those bent on improving the lot of children knew that reform meant commitment to an uphill struggle. By the end of the century, much has changed: child labor, while still present, has been outlawed in most industries, women vote and hold many high offices; and de jure racial segregation is largely a memory. Yet the state of children remains precarious, with poverty a persistent theme throughout the century. The fifteen articles in this volume cover a wide range of social conditions, public policies, and approaches to problem solving. Though history does not repeat itself precisely, problems, controversies about solutions, and certain themes do. A History of Child Welfare takes up social and economic conditions that correlate with increasing rates of child abuse and neglect, and an increasing number of children in out-of-home care. This volume distinguishes approaches that have been useful from those that have failed. In this way, these serious reflections help build on past successes and avoid previous errors.

A History of Chinese Art in the 20th and 21st Century
English | 2025 | ISBN: 9819753260 | 1232 Pages | PDF (True) | 663 MB
This book situates the development of 20th and 21st century Chinese art in such fundamental contexts as Chinese politics and social change and is ideally suited for readers to understand the particularities of Chinese art that are distinct from Western art history. Such an approach is appropriate to the understanding of the development of modern Chinese art, which differs from both the Western approach to art history and the approach to traditional Chinese art, which is limited to the combing of ink and brush heritage and ideological traditions. Based on the scale and influence of historical works, considering the specificity of the term involving 'fine art' in China, and the scope of influence of the phenomenon of fine art in the cultural field, this book's study of the phenomena of painting, sculpture, photography, video and mixed-media art follows two linear time lines of historical relevance: 1949-1978 and 1978 to the present. Special attention is paid to the development of modern and contemporary art after 1978. The main readers of this book are: undergraduate students in art schools, graduate and doctoral students in art history; students in other humanities disciplines; experts and professors in the study of 20th century Chinese art and cultural history should be important readers of this book.

George Ryley Scott, "A History of Prostitution: From Antiquity to the Present Day"
English | 2006 | ISBN: 071031177X | EPUB | pages: 354 | 4.4 mb
This scientific survey of history of prostitution from antiquity to the twentieth century is one of the first comprehensive studies of this sociological phenomenon of our time. George Ryley Scott writes this treatise in reaction to the lack of literature on the subject at this time, dismissing the only volumes available as outdated, fragmentary or prejudiced- as they were often sponsored by reformist groups. Thus, Scott presents us with a refreshingly honest and nonbiased view of prostitution as it was throughout history up until its first publishing in 1936.

Sir John William Fortescue, "A History of the British Army - Vol. II (1714-1763)"
English | 2013 | ASIN: B00BWZYYN6 | EPUB | pages: 545 | 0.7 mb
Sir John Fortescue holds a pre-eminent place amongst British military historians, his enduring fame and legacy resting mainly on his life's work "The History of the British Army", issued in 20 volumes, which took him some 30 years to complete. In scope and breadth it is such that no modern scholar has attempted to cover such a large and diverse subject in its entirety; but Sir John did so and with aplomb, leading to a readable and comprehensive study.

According to Professor Emeritus of Military History at King's College, Brian Bond, the work was "the product of indefatigable research in original documents, a determination to present a clear, accurate, and readable narrative of military operations, and a close personal knowledge of the battlefields, which enabled him to elucidate his account with excellent maps. Most important, however, was his motivation: namely, a lifelong affection for the old, long-service, pre-Cardwell army, the spirit of the regiments of which it largely consisted, and the value of its traditions to the nation. An important part of his task was to distil and inculcate these soldierly virtues which, in his conservative view, contrasted sharply with the unedifying character of politicians who habitually meddled in military matters." ODNB.
This second volume covers the period from 1713 to 1763, including the Jacobite rebellion of 1715, the wars of Austrian Succession, and British expansion into America and India and the enduring struggle with France for Imperial power.
A MUST READ for any military enthusiast.
Author - Fortescue, J. W. Sir, 1859-1933.
Text taken, whole and complete, from the second edition published in1910, London, by Macmillan and Co.
Original Page Count - xxii and 606 pages.
Illustrations - Numerous maps and plans

A History of the Medicines We Take: From Ancient Times to Present Day by Anthony C Cartwright, N Anthony Armstrong
English | August 3, 2020 | ISBN: 1526724030 | 272 pages | PDF | 17 Mb
Remedies the gap in the market for a guide to the history of the medicines we take not just the drugs they contain.

A History of the Medicines We Take gives a lively account of the development of medicines from traces of herbs found with the remains of Neanderthal man, to prescriptions written on clay tablets from Mesopotamia in the third millennium BC, to pure drugs extracted from plants in the nineteenth century to the latest biotechnology antibody products.
The first ten chapters of the book in PART ONE give an account of the development of the active drugs from herbs used in early medicine, many of which are still in use, to the synthetic chemical drugs and modern biotechnology products. The remaining eight chapters in PART TWO tell the story of the developments in the preparations that patients take and their inventors, such as Christopher Wren, who gave the first intravenous injection in 1656, and William Brockedon who invented the tablet in 1843. The book traces the changes in patterns of prescribing from simple dosage forms, such as liquid mixtures, pills, ointments, lotions, poultices, powders for treating wounds, inhalations, eye drops, enemas, pessaries and suppositories mentioned in the Egyptian Ebers papyrus of 1550 BCE to the complex tablets, injections and inhalers in current use. Today nearly three-quarters of medicines dispensed to patients are tablets and capsules. A typical pharmacy now dispenses about as many prescriptions in a working day as a mid-nineteenth- century chemist did in a whole year.

A Jew in the Roman Bathhouse: Cultural Interaction in the Ancient Mediterranean by Yaron Eliav
English | May 16, 2023 | ISBN: 0691243433 | 392 pages | MOBI | 23 Mb
A provocative account of Jewish encounters with the public baths of ancient Rome

Public bathhouses embodied the Roman way of life, from food and fashion to sculpture and sports. The most popular institution of the ancient Mediterranean world, the baths drew people of all backgrounds. They were places suffused with nudity, sex, and magic. A Jew in the Roman Bathhouse reveals how Jews navigated this space with ease and confidence, engaging with Roman bath culture rather than avoiding it.
In this landmark interdisciplinary work of cultural history, Yaron Eliav uses the Roman bathhouse as a social laboratory to reexamine how Jews interacted with Graeco-Roman culture. He reconstructs their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about the baths and the activities that took place there, documenting their pleasures as well as their anxieties and concerns. Archaeologists have excavated hundreds of bathhouse facilities across the Mediterranean. Graeco-Roman writers mention the bathhouse frequently, and rabbinic literature contains hundreds of references to the baths. Eliav draws on the archaeological and literary record to offer fresh perspectives on the Jews of antiquity, developing a new model for the ways smaller and often weaker groups interact with large, dominant cultures.
A compelling and richly evocative work of scholarship, A Jew in the Roman Bathhouse challenges us to rethink the relationship between Judaism and Graeco-Roman society, shedding new light on how cross-cultural engagement shaped Western civilization.
