Informed by a modified version of Goffman's original concept of the total institution, A Sociology of the Total Organization untangles the Foreign Legion and the ways in which different kinds of social orders interplay there. With a focus on regimental life, the author characterizes the armed forces not only as a total organization, but also as a greedy one, seeking undivided loyalty and the incorporation of all social roles within its bounds. Against this understanding, the book draws on rich ethnographic work to develop the notion of atomistic unity, the ideal relational condition that exists in the military, in which individuals commit to a unit and articulate ties with individuals on an impersonal basis, grounded in the belief in a greater whole. A detailed and empirically grounded study of the mechanisms in which the Foreign Legion not only cuts members' ties to people outside the organization, but also restricts the creation and maintenance of ties among its members, this book shows how atomistic unity is not limited to greedy organizations such as the military, but applies to a variety of collectivist settings. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology and anthropology with interests in military life, social relations, social theory and the work of Goffman.

In 2023, it won the Informatics Europe Best Dissertation Award, granted to the most outstanding European PhD thesis in the field of computer science.

It is our pleasure to present the papers accepted and presented at the 5th Int- national School and Symposium on Advanced Distributed Systems (ISSADS) in this LNCS volume. The symposium was held in the city of Guadalajara,Mexico from January 24 to 28, 2005. The organization team was composed of members of CINVESTAV Guadalajara, Rostock University in Germany, the CUCEI and CUCEA campuses of Guadalajara University, and Instituto Tecnol´ ogico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente, ITESO. The symposium is already a we- established annual meeting, at which scientists and people from the industrial ?eld meet and discuss the progress of applications and the theory of distributed systems in a forum during the last week of January. This year, more than 250 people from 3 continents attended the conference. Most of them are scientists, teachers, students and engineers from the local industry. The papers presented in the sessions of the symposium cover not only the subjects of distributed systems from the system level and applications, but also contributions from the area of theory and arti?cial intelligence concepts. These papers were selected out of more than 100 submissions. There was a selection ?lter in which each paper was evaluated by at least three members of the - ternational Program Committee, who came from research institutions of good reputation all over the world.

This, which is the n- ural path of all new areas, comes at a price, however. A certain enthusiasm, a certain adventurousness from the early years is fading and may have been lost on the way. The ?eld has become more reasonable. To counterbalance this and to encourage lively discussions, a conceptual track, where papers were judged on criteria like importance and/or novelty of the concepts proposed rather than the experimental/theoretical results, has been introduced this year. A conference on a theme as broad as Arti?cial Life is bound to be very - verse,but a few tendencies emerged. First, ?elds like 'Robotics and Autonomous Agents' or 'Evolutionary Computation' are still extremely active and keep on bringing a wealth of results to the A-Life community. Even there, however, new tendencies appear, like collective robotics, and more speci?cally self-assembling robotics, which represent now a large subsection. Second, new areas appear.

On behalf of the ProgramCommittee, we are pleased to present the proceedings of the 2005 Asia-Paci?c Computer Systems Architecture Conference (ACSAC 2005) held in the beautiful and dynamic country of Singapore. This conference was the tenth in its series, one of the leading forums for sharing the emerging research ?ndings in this ?eld. In consultation with the ACSAC Steering Committee, we selected a - member Program Committee. This Program Committee represented a broad spectrum of research expertise to ensure a good balance of research areas, - stitutions and experience while maintaining the high quality of this conference series. This year's committee was of the same size as last year but had 19 new faces. We received a total of 173 submissions which is 14% more than last year. Each paper was assigned to at least three and in some cases four ProgramC- mittee members for review. Wherever necessary, the committee members called upon the expertise of their colleagues to ensure the highest possible quality in the reviewing process. As a result, we received 415 reviews from the Program Committee members and their 105 co-reviewers whose names are acknowledged inthe proceedings.Theconferencecommitteeadopteda systematicblind review process to provide a fair assessment of all submissions. In the end, we accepted 65 papers on a broad range of topics giving an acceptance rate of 37.5%. We are grateful to all the Program Committee members and the co-reviewers for their e?orts in completing the reviews within a tight schedule.
