This book is an intervention in Hamlet scholarship. In Thus Spake Zarathustra (1885), Nietzsche famously posited the death of God, taken to mean the dissolution of all horizons within which human beings construct a plausible ontology that gives words significance. The idea of God, as a transcendental signified (to borrow from Derrida), underwrites meaning and values. Socrates placed knowing as the highest philosophical good over two millennia ago; however, once we find that God (i.e. any transcendental signified) is unknowable, the world vanishes. In a world bereft of concepts and meaning, Nietzsche's philosophical project becomes one of "redeeming" pure willing as itself constitutive of world.
Hamlet and the criticism surrounding it is caught within competing horizons we know are circuitous and unending. We tiresomely make theoretical rounds between competing sets of interpretations that boil down to either establishing meaning within the play (the text transcending its history and revealing universal truths) or situating the text within its proper historical timeframe in order to get it to speak. In short, we are trapped between contextualizing and decontextualizing approaches. Yet we know both approaches, as competing horizons we commit to at the outset, are dead. But to abandon both at the outset means that the text, Hamlet, is itself dead. So how to get it to speak?

The book provides a self-contained and complete description of the long time evolution of the solutions to a class of one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations, in which the diffusion is given by an integral operator. The underlying motivation is the mathematical analysis of models for biological invasions. The model under study, while simple looking, is of current use in real-life situations. Interestingly, it arises in totally different contexts, such as the study of branching random walks in probability theory. While the model has attracted a lot of attention, and while many partial results about the time-asymptotic behaviour of its solutions have been proved over the last decades, some basic questions on the sharp asymptotics have remained unanswered. One ambition of this monograph is to close these gaps. In some of the situations that we envisage, the level sets organise themselves into an invasion front that is asymptotically linear in time, up to a correction that converges exponentially in time to a constant. In other situations that constitute the main and newest part of the work, the correction is asymptotically logarithmic in time. Despite these apparently different behaviours, there is an underlying common way of thinking that is underlined. At the end of each chapter, a long set of problems is proposed, many of them rather elaborate and suitable for master's projects or even the first question in a PhD thesis. Open questions are also discussed. The ideas presented in the book apply to more elaborate systems modelling biological invasions or the spatial propagation of epidemics. The models themselves may be multidimensional, but they all have in common a mechanism imposing the propagation in a given direction; examples are presented in the problems that conclude each chapter. These ideas should also be useful in the treatment of further models that we are not able to envisage for the time being. The book is suitable for graduate or PhD students as well as researchers.

This volume describes Keres' first brilliances and outlines his rapid development to assured and unchallengeable mastery. His victims include Botvinnik, Capablanca and the great Alekhine himself (whom he beat with a characteristically fine Queen sacrifice). Keres is probably the best writer on chess of all the practicing grandmasters. His annotations to these games form a thorough description, at once profound and lucid, of the processes of thought that go to make up a grandmaster. The quality of Keres is such as to make this book and its companion volumes a standard work on strategy and tactics - a standard work on chess itself - as well as a collection of almost impeccable classic games. Paul Keres was one of the five or six strongest players in the world from 1935 when he emerged as a sensational 19-year-old at the 1935 World Chess Olympics in Warsaw until his untimely death by heart attack at the time of an international airplane flight from Vancouver to Helsinki in 1975. During most of his life, Keres was the number three player in the world. This unfortunate circumstance led to the top two players in the world playing repeated matches for the World Chess Championship, whereas Keres who was usually number three never got a shot at the World Championship. Keres was a native of Estonia. He was always an Estonian patriot, even though he had to keep quiet about it during the years of Soviet rule. His picture appears on both the money and the postage stamps of Estonia. His greatest result ever was his tie for first in the strongest chess tournament ever played, AVRO 1938, a double round-robin tournament to determine who would be the next challenger to World Champion Alexander Alekhine. Keres tied with Fine and finished ahead of future champion Mikhail Botvinnik, current champion Alekhine, former world champions Max Euwe and Capablanca, and Grandmasters Samuel Reshevsky and Salo Flohr. This result earned Keres the right to play a match with Alekhine for the World Chess Championship, a match that Keres would almost certainly have won, but World War II intervened and the match was never played.

Foreign investment has been widely perceived as a panacea for developing countries-as a way to reduce poverty and kick-start sustainable modern industries. The Enclave Economy calls this prescription into question, showing that Mexico's post-NAFTA experience of foreign direct investment in its information technology sector, particularly in the Guadalajara region, did not result in the expected benefits. Charting the rise and fall of Mexico's "Silicon Valley," the authors explore issues that resonate through much of Latin America and the developing world: the social, economic, and environmental effects of market-driven globalization. In the 1990s, Mexico was a poster child for globalization, throwing open its borders to trade and foreign investment, embracing NAFTA, and ending the government's role in strengthening domestic industry. But The Enclave Economy shows that although Mexico was initially successful in attracting multinational corporations, foreign investments waned in the absence of active government support and as China became increasingly competitive. Moreover, the authors find that foreign investment created an "enclave economy" the benefits of which were confined to an international sector not connected to the wider Mexican economy. In fact, foreign investment put many local IT firms out of business and transferred only limited amounts of environmentally sound technology. The authors suggest policies and strategies that will enable Mexico and other developing countries to foster foreign investment for sustainable development in the future.
