The first vehicle to be produced in any numbers for the Panzerwaffe was the tiny Panzer I known as the MG Panzerwagen. Almost from the outset the limitations of the design for the Panzer I were obvious. It was essentially a training vehicle, which was only pressed into service as a last resort. It was to be succeeded by the Panzer II, which could at least engage armored cars and combat against tanks with approximately the same armor as itself.
Together these two tanks formed the bulk of the armor, which between 1939 and 1941 conquered half of Europe.

Biomarkers are used in many aspects of health surveillance to identify disease pr- ence, track disease progression, monitor drug delivery or metabolism, or monitor chemical exposure. There is a recognized need to expand and improve biomarker identi?cation and quanti?cation. Exposures to the xenobiotic organophosphates (OPs) range from low-level, chronic exposure during pesticide application (e. g. , on farms, in residences, or in the workplace) to high-dose, acute exposures incl- ing release of nerve agents or toxic industrial OPs. OPs can have both rapid and chronic toxicity, due to their action on speci?c esterases and lipases, most notably acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and neuropathic target esterase (NTE). In each of the above examples, a rapid and accurate assessment of the OP to which the person was exposed, degree of exposure, and time period of exposure will help direct therapy to the victim and assess the level of threat to others. Traditionally, metabolites for speci?c OPs can be measured in the urine after an exposure, such as 3,5,6-trichloro- 2-pyridinol for chlorpyrifos (CPS). However, there are several problems with this method. Usually, the metabolite is excreted for only a short period of several days after a signi?cant exposure. In addition, due to the widespread use of CPS and en- ronmental persistence of its breakdown products, the metabolites appear at a high background level in the general population (Hill et al. 1995). Their appearance does not indicate whether the individual was exposed to the harmful parent compound, or the harmless breakdown product.

The eighteenth annual British HCI Conference chose as its theme Design for Life. 'Life' has many facets, from work (of course, or should we say inevitably!) to travel, fun and other forms of leisure. We selected 23 full papers out of 63 submitted, which covered our interaction with computer systems in a variety of types of life situation - including games, tourism and certain types of work - and also covered a variety of stages in our lives, from the young to the elderly. These papers were complemented by others that described more traditional aspects of research in the field of human-computer interaction. In putting together the programme we followed a three-stage process. First each paper was reviewed by at least three reviewers. Then a member of the committee conducted a meta-review. Finally, all sets of reviews were considered by the technical chairs who assembled a programme that was submitted to, and approved by, the full committee. This process was greatly assisted by the use of the Precision Conference Solutions web-based submission system. Even more important, of course, were the volunteer reviewers themselves. In recognition, this year we have made an award for the best reviewer as well as one for the best paper.

Ancient Greece is famous as the civilization which 'gave' the world democracy. Democracy has in modern times become the rallying cry of liberation from supposed totalitarianism and dictatorship. And the desire by the western powers, especially America, to foment (or impose) democracy across the globe is one of the most powerful driving motors in present-day geopolitics: not least in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thus, a lively and well informed treatment of the nexus between politics in antiquity and political discourse in the modern era is both timely and apposite. As Kostas Vlassopoulos shows, much can be learned about the practice of politics from a comparative discussion of the classical and the contemporary. His starting point is that the value of looking back to a political system with different assumptions and elements can help us think, and even shape, what the future of modern politics might be.
He discusses the contrasting political systems prevalent in the Greek city-states of Athens, Sparta and Corinth; tensions between democrats and oligarchs in Periclean Athens; the bitter rivalries which led to the Peloponnesian Wars in the fifth century BCE; and, the delicate balance of powers between people, senate and emperor in the hierarchical society of republican and latterly imperial Rome. Above all, the book shows how important and surprising the study of antiquity can be in reassessing and revaluating modern political debates.
