Writing History for the King is at once a reassessment of the reign of Henry II of England (1133-1189) and an original contribution to our understanding of the rise of vernacular historiography in the high Middle Ages. Charity Urbanski focuses on two dynastic histories commissioned by Henry: Wace's Roman de Rou (c. 1160-1174) and Benoît de Sainte-Maure's Chronique des ducs de Normandie (c. 1174-1189). In both cases, Henry adopted the new genre of vernacular historical writing in Old French verse in an effort to disseminate a royalist version of the past that would help secure a grip on power for himself and his children. Wace was the first to be commissioned, but in 1174 the king abruptly fired him, turning the task over to Benoît de Sainte-Maure.

Urbanski examines these histories as part of a single enterprise intended to cement the king's authority by enhancing the prestige of Henry II's dynasty. In a close reading of Wace's Rou, she shows that it presented a less than flattering picture of Henry's predecessors, in effect challenging his policies and casting a shadow over the legitimacy of his rule. Benoît de Sainte-Maure's Chronique, in contrast, mounted a staunchly royalist defense of Anglo-Norman kingship. Urbanski reads both works in the context of Henry's reign, arguing that as part of his drive to curb baronial power he sought a history that would memorialize his dynasty and solidify its claim to England and Normandy.

Light element analysis has long been a goal of microprobe analysts since Ray Dolby first detected K radiation with a gas proportional counter in 1960. WDS techniques (using carbon lead stearate films) were not used for this purpose until four years later. Now synthetic multilayers provide the best dispersive elements for quantitative light element analy sis-still used in conjunction with a gas counter.

The Great War is now in full swing, and almost every nation in Europe has been dragged into it. Now, the Greeks and the Romanians are about to enter the conflict. The Romanian offensive into Transylvania, combined with the disastrous fall Austro-Hungarian offensive of 1914 and the encircled Przemysl fortress, are threatening to unhinge the Dual Monarchy and knock Austria-Hungary out of the war. Just south of them, Germano-Russians will soon clash in Poland (East of Warsaw), and the Germans will employ a terrible weapon for the first time in the war.
In Italy, things are stalemated, as they are in France, with stabilized frontlines. Neither side is capable of launching a major offensive or breaking the trench line defenses of the other. First, because it is the middle of winter, but more because the Franco-British are exhausted and demoralized and need time to rebuild their forces. Meanwhile, the Germans don't have a choice but to send a lot of troops to save the Austro-Hungarians and East Prussia.
At sea, the German High Sea Fleet is poised to make a splash as it is now in the French Atlantic ports, while the epic saga between Admiral Maximilian von Spee of the German Pacific Squadron and legendary Japanese Tōgō Heihachirō of the Imperial Navy battle fleet continues.
In between, Zeppelins airships begin their bombing of London, the Austro-Hungarian Fleet attempts a sortie out of the Adriatic, and the Greek navy tries to escape from the clutches of the newly constituted British East Mediterranean Squadron.
This is the story of the Great War that might have been.

Centering her study on a vast corpus of early modern textual and visual sources, Russo contends that the subtlety and inventiveness of the myriad of American, Asian, and African creations that were pillaged, exchanged, and often eventually destroyed in the context of Iberian colonization―including sculpture, painting, metalwork, mosaic, carving, architecture, and masonry―actually challenged and revolutionized sixteenth-century European definitions of what art is and what it means to be human. In this way, artifacts coming from outside Europe between 1400 and 1600 played a definitive role in what are considered distinctively European transformations: the redefinition of the frontier between the "mechanical" and the "liberal" arts and a new conception of the figure of the artist.
