Structural design in fire conditions is conceptually similar to structural design in normal temperature conditions, but often more difficult because of internal forces induced by thermal expansion, strength reduction due to elevated temperatures, much larger deflections, and numerous other factors. This book of proceedings collects the papers presented at the Workshop on Diagnostics for ITER, held at Villa Monastero, Varenna (Italy), from August 28 to September 1, 1995. The Workshop was organised by the International School of Plasma Physics "Piero Caldirola. " Established in 1971, the ISPP has organised over fifty advanced courses and workshops on topics mainly related to plasma physics. In particular, courses and workshops on plasma diagnostics (previously held in 1975, 1978, 1982, 1986, and 1991) can be considered milestones in the history of this institution. Looking back at the proceedings of the previous meetings in Varenna, one can appreciate the rapid progress in the field of plasma diagnostics over the past 20 years. The 1995 workshop was co-organised by the Istituto di Fisica del Plasma of the National Research Council (CNR). In contrast to previous Varenna meetings on diagnostics, which have covered diagnostics in present-day tokamaks and which have had a substantial tutorial component, the 1995 workshop concentrated specifically on the problems and challenges of ITER diagnostics. ITER (the International Thennonuclear Experimental Reactor, a joint venture of Europe, Japan, Russia, and the United States, presently under design) will need to measure a wide range of plasma parameters in order to reach and sustain high levels of fusion power. A list of the measurement requirements together with the parameter ranges, target measurement resolutions, and accuracies provides the starting point for selecting a list of candidate diagnostic systems.

The Dialectics of Exile: Nation, Time, Language and Space in Hispanic Literatures offers a theory of exile writing that accounts for the persistence of these dual impulses and for the ways that they often co-exist within the same literary works.
Focusing on writers working in the latter part of the twentieth century who were exiled during a historical moment of increasing globalization, transnational economics, and the theoretical shifts of postmodernism, Sophia A. McClennen proposes that exile literature is best understood as a series of dialectic tensions about cultural identity. Through comparative analysis of Juan Goytisolo (Spain), Ariel Dorfman (Chile) and Cristina Peri Rossi (Uruguay), this book explores how these writers represent exile identity. Am 6. Dezember 1915 und am 8. Januar 1916 legte Arnold Sommerfeld der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zwei Abhandlungen im Umfang von 75 Druckseiten vor, mit denen er das Bohrsche Atommodell aus dem Jahr 1913 zur Bohr-Sommerfeldschen Atomtheorie erweiterte. In Sommerfelds Gesammelten Schriften findet sich nur die im Juli 1916 von Sommerfeld in den Annalen der Physik eingereichte Publikation darüber. "Meine Spektrallinien sind endlich in der Akademie in's Unreine gedruckt. In den Annalen werden sie in geläuterter Form erscheinen", so hatte Sommerfeld am 10. Februar 1916 dem Herausgeber der Annalen der Physik diese Publikation angekündigt. Aus wissenschaftshistorischer Sicht sind für die Erweiterung der Bohrschen Atomtheorie jedoch gerade die vor dem Läuterungsprozess publizierten Akademieabhandlungen von besonderem Interesse. Der Reproduktion dieser Akademieabhandlungen wird ein ausführlicher physikhistorischer Essay (ca. 100 Druckseiten) vorangestellt.

'Alice Miller hat mich eigentlich mein ganzes Berufsleben lang begleitet. Es war einer der Sternstunden als ich das "Drama des begabten Kindes" las, in der ersten Ausgabe. Später wurde diese um- und fortgeschrieben, aber die erste Ausgabe blieb unerreicht.
Zwischendrin habe ich sie dann mal verloren, in ihrer dunklen Zeit, als sie sich vor Verzweiflung, wie lange es dauert, Veränderungen herbeizuführen, Konrad Stettbacher zuwandte. Aber dann kam sie zurück und dieses Buch ist ein würdiges Abschiedsbuch. Ihrer Kernthese ist sie treu geblieben, dass es gesellschaftlich verboten ist, wahrzunehmen, wie Kinder brutal misshandelt werden und wie sehr dies auch für Therapien gilt. Und da hat sie wohl recht. Sie macht es am vierten Gebot fest ("Du sollst Vater und Mutter ehren") und weist nach, dass dies zu einer entsprechenden Programmierung geführt hat.
In Wahrheit ist es natürlich nicht neu, dass der Körper eine bestimmte Sprache spricht, wenn er krank wird. Es gibt sehr viel und auch sehr viel gute und einfühlsame Literatur, die psychosomatische Zusammenhänge beschreibt. Aber keiner hat sich so deutlich auf die Seite des Kindes gestellt und keiner hat so radikal Empathiefähigkeit von Therapeuten eingefordert.'
