It starts with function optimization and constraint inclusion and then extends to functional optimization using the calculus of variations. The development of optimal controls for continuous-time, linear, open-loop systems is presented using Lagrangian and Pontryagin-Hamiltonian methods, showing how to introduce the end-point conditions in time and state. The closed-loop optimal control for linear systems with a quadratic cost function, well-known as the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) is developed for both time-bound and time-unbounded conditions. Some control systems need to maximize performance alongside cost minimization. The Pontryagin's maximum principle is presented in this regard with clear examples that show the practical implementation of it. It is shown through examples how the maximum principle leads to control switching and Bang-Bang control in certain types of systems. The application of optimal controls in discrete-time open-loop systems with the quadratic cost is presented and then extended to the closed-loop control, which results in the model predictive control (MPC). Throughout the book, examples and Matlab simulation codes are provided for the learner to practice the contents in each section. The aligned lineup of content helps the learner develop knowledge and skills in optimal control gradually and quickly.

Originally developed to support the infantry formations of the Germany's armored divisions, the Pzkpfw IV medium tank was increasingly pressed into service as a tank killer as stronger and more well-armored enemy vehicles were encountered. By the end of 1943, despite the appearance of the Tiger and Panther, it could be said that the Pzkpfw IV was the most important tank, at least numerically, in the Wehrmacht's arsenal. Mechanically reliable and relatively cheap to produce the tank's large wheel base and turret circumference meant that it could be up-gunned with minimal disruption to production and adapted to a number of different roles including self-propelled anti-tank gun, anti-aircraft tank, bridgelayer and armored recovery vehicle. Although assembly of the Pzkpfw IV was officially terminated in late 1944, as the tank had fallen out of favour with Hitler, production was soon resumed and continued until the final days of the conflict. During September 1944, the US Navy's Task Force 38 launched a series of huge airstrikes against Japanese forces in the Philippines. Seventeen carriers, wielding over 1,000 combat aircraft, made up the most powerful naval fleet assembled to date. It was the first time aircraft carriers had dared to confront a major land-based air force. Over a period of two weeks, TF 38 demonstrated the power and mobility of the Fast Carrier Task Force. The strike forces claimed 368 Japanese aircraft shot down and 446 destroyed on the ground, with over a hundred ships destroyed and significant damage to ground installations.
This book is the first to focus on the campaign, and is illustrated with archive photos, original artwork, maps and 3D diagrams. Renowned Pacific War historian Edward M. Young draws upon after-action reports and other primary sources to explain how these September strikes impacted the reeling forces of Imperial Japan. Soon overshadowed by the invasion of Leyte and the enormous Battle of Leyte Gulf, few detailed accounts of this campaign exist. But it was an important stage in the Pacific War, for the relative ease of these raids prompted the planned invasion of Leyte to be brought forwards by two months.

While the human eye can practically cope only with two aspects of light, brightness and colour, for many animals polarization is a further source of visual information. This fascinating phenomenon of polarization sensitivity is comprehensively treated by Horvath and Varju. Starting with a short introduction into imaging polarimetry - an efficient technique for measuring light polarization - various polarization patterns occurring in nature are presented. Among them are the polarizational characteristics of water surfaces, mirages and the underwater light field as well as the celestial polarization patterns affected by the illumination conditions of sunrise, sunset, clear or cloudy skies, moonshine and total solar eclipses.The major part of the book is dedicated to the question: How can animals perceive and use the natural and artificial polarization patterns? Following a detailed compendium of the physiological basis of polarization sensitivity, several case studies of animal behaviour determined or influenced by polarization are presented. It is shown how arial, terrestrial and aquatic animals use the celestial and underwater polarization for orientation, e. g. how polarized light serves honeybees or ants as a compass. Further, it is explained how man-made objects affecting the natural optical environment may disorientate animals. For instance, as in the case where oil or glass surfaces, asphalt roads, or plastic sheets used in agriculture can be more attractive for water-seeking polarotactic insects than the water surface, and where mayflies lay their eggs on dry asphalt roads or cars.
