This book aims at introducing students into the modern analytical foundations to treat problems and situations in the Calculus of Variations solidly and rigorously. Since no background is taken for granted or assumed, as the textbook pretends to be self-contained, areas like basic Functional Analysis and Sobolev spaces are studied to the point that chapters devoted to these topics can be utilized by themselves as an introduction to these important parts of Analysis. The material in this regard has been selected to serve the needs of classical variational problems, leaving broader treatments for more advanced and specialized courses in those areas. It should not be forgotten that problems in the Calculus of Variations historically played a crucial role in pushing Functional Analysis as a discipline on its own right. The style is intentionally didactic. After a first general chapter to place optimization problems in infinite-dimensional spaces in perspective, the first part of the book focuses on the initial important concepts in Functional Analysis and introduces Sobolev spaces in dimension one as a preliminary, simpler case (much in the same way as in the successful book of H. Brezis). Once the analytical framework is covered, one-dimensional variational problems are examined in detail including numerous examples and exercises. The second part dwells, again as a first-round, on another important chapter of Functional Analysis that students should be exposed to, and that eventually will find some applications in subsequent chapters. The first chapter of this part examines continuous operators and the important principles associated with mappings between functional spaces; and another one focuses on compact operators and their fundamental and remarkable properties for Analysis. Finally, the third part advances to multi-dimensional Sobolev spaces and the corresponding problems in the Calculus of Variations. In this setting, problems become much more involved and, for this same reason, much more interesting and appealing. In particular, the final chapter dives into a number of advanced topics, some of which reflect a personal taste. Other possibilities stressing other kinds of problems are possible. In summary, the text pretends to help students with their first exposure to the modern calculus of variations and the analytical foundation associated with it. In particular, it covers an extended introduction to basic functional analysis and to Sobolev spaces. The tone of the text and the set of proposed exercises will facilitate progressive understanding until the need for further challenges beyond the topics addressed here will push students to more advanced horizons.

The wartime interest in Greenland was a direct result of its vital strategic position-if you wanted to predict the weather in Europe, you had to have men in place on the vast, frozen island. The most celebrated example of Greenland's crucial contribution to Allied meteorological services is the correct weather forecast in June 1944 leading to the decision to launch the invasion of Normandy. In addition, both before and after D-Day a stream of weather reports from Greenland was essential for the Allied ability to carry out the bombing offensive against Germany.
The Germans were aware of the value of Greenland from a meteorological point of view, and they repeatedly attempted to establish semi-permanent weather stations along the sparsely populated east coast of the island. This resulted in an epic cat-and-mouse game, in which US Coast Guard personnel assisted by a celebrated sledge patrol manned by Scandinavian adventurers struggled to locate and eliminate German bases before they could make any difference. It's a story seldom told, but the fact remains that Greenland was the only part of the North American continent in which German troops maintained a presence throughout almost the entirety of the war.
At the same time, the US entry into the war triggered an enormous American effort to hastily establish the necessary infrastructure in the form of harbors and air bases that enabled Greenland to form a vital link in the effort to send men and supplies across the North Atlantic in the face of stern opposition from the German Navy. While Allied ships were passing through Greenland waters in massive numbers, planes were plying the so-called Snowball Route from Greenland over Iceland to the British Isles.
This gave rise to number of tragic incidents, such as the sinking of the transport ship SS Dorchester off Greenland in February 1942, leading to the deaths of 674 out of 904 men on board, including the "Four Chaplains"-representing the Methodists, the Reformed Church, the Catholic Church, and Judaism-who gave up their life jackets to save others. In July the same year, in one of the most massive, forced landings in history, "the lost squadron," six P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft and two Flying Fortresses, crash-landed on a Greenland glacier.

Die Entwicklung mathematischer Werkzeuge zur Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung und Statistik führte zu der bis in unser Jahrhundert unangefochtenen Stellung der Stochastik als der besten wissenschaftlichen Methode zur Behandlung von Aspekten der Ungewißheit. In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts etablierte sich dann die Fuzzy Theorie, die Lotfi Zadeh in der Arbeit "Fuzzy Sets" (1965) als Verallgemeinerung der Can torschen Mengentheorie begründete, als eine ernstzunehmende Konkurrentin für die Aufgabe, Ungewißheiten zu modellieren. Er untersucht, wie die Genetische Programmierung, eine Methode aus der künstlichen Intelligenzforschung, nutzbar gemacht werden kann, um zu wirklichkeitsnahen Modellen zu gelangen. Der Autor zeigt die wissenschaftstheoretischen Wurzeln der ökonomischer Modellierung auf und setzt sich kritisch mit ihrem derzeitigen Stand auseinander. Es wird deutlich, dass der Kernpunkt einer realistischen Darstellung die empirische Fundierung der in den Modellen unterstellten Zusammenhänge ist. Daher werden Kriterien für Verfahren erarbeitet, die diese empirische Fundierung leisten können, und es wird dargelegt, dass die Genetische Programmierung ein geeignetes Verfahren ist. Zahlreiche Beispiele und Beispielanwendungen veranschaulichen die Arbeit, und der im Anhang angegebene Quell-Code einer Genetischen Programmierungs-Routine ermöglicht dem Leser, die Genetische Programmierung selbst einzusetzen.

Beginning with a close examination of Freud's work on Leonardo da Vinci, Cho analyzes film, art, our relationship to nature, politics, group psychology, love, and philosophy to demonstrate that genius, far from an elitist notion, is universally available through a different approach to ideas of imperfection, disappointment, and failure.
