Reflections on Gender from a Communication Point-of-View : GenderSpectives By Laura Finley; Nickesia Gordon
2017 | 254 Pages | ISBN: 144381699X | PDF | 1 MB
This volume documents the experiences of, and reflections on, gender from undergraduate students in the field of Communication. It is the product of conversations, queries and discoveries that emerged from a spirited Communication and Gender course offered by the Department of Communication at Barry University, USA. The essays collected here offer an introspective from the students' point of view as they grapple with gender issues as they intersect with their identities, sexualities, race and ethnicity, and nationalities, as well as socio-economic backgrounds in their everyday communicative experiences. On a subject as personal as gender, multiple perspectives exist, many of which do not necessarily fit traditional ideas about how to enact gender. The students' reflections explore a diversity of standpoints on gender as they internalize ideas about selfhood and scrutinize their own understandings of gender as it is constructed, performed, evaluated, and negotiated through communication.

Reforming Collateral Laws to Expand Access to Finance By Heywood Fleisig; Mehnaz Safavian; Nuria de la Pena; Nuria De La Pena
2006 | 120 Pages | ISBN: 0821364901 | PDF | 1 MB
Most readers, especially those with car loans or home mortgages, know about "collateral"--property that the lender can take away from the borrower in the event that the borrower defaults. In low/middle income countries, it is understood that conservative lenders exclude firms from credit markets with their excessive collateral requirements. Usually, this is because only some property is acceptable as collateral: large holdings of urban real estate and, sometimes, new motor vehicles. Microenterprises, SMEs, and the poor have little of this property but they do have an array of productive assets that could easily be harnessed to serve as collateral. It is only the legal framework which prevents firms from using these assets to secure loans. In countries with reformed laws governing collateral, property such as equipment, inventory, accounts receivable, livestock are considered excellent collateral. This book aims to better equip project managers to implement reforms to the legal and institutional framework for collateral (secured transactions). It discusses the importance of movable property as a source of collateral for firms, the relationship between the legal framework governing movable assets and the financial sector consequences for firms (better loan terms, increased access, more competitive financial sector), and how reforms can be put in place to change the lending environment.

Reinterpreting the Borderline : Heidegger and the Psychoanalytic Understanding of Borderline Personality Disorder By Paul Cammell
2016 | 287 Pages | ISBN: 1442252847 | EPUB | 1 MB
Reinterpreting the Borderline is a timely and comprehensive analysis of Heidegger's philosophy and its relevance to the clinical fields of psychiatry, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis. Cammell presents the key elements of Heidegger's philosophy and further explores affiliations with other key philosophers influenced by Heidegger. By applying these philosophical ideas to developmental models and clinical treatments of borderline personality disorder, Cammell develops a system of ideas he terms "hermeneutic ontology," exploring the fundamentally relational, embodied, affective, temporal, and technical aspects of existence that become problematized in the experience of "the borderline"--both for the suffering individual and the concerned clinician. Cammell posits that "borderline experience" extends beyond the suffering individual to the context of the psychotherapy itself, something in which the therapist and suffering individual must collaborate to overcome. Reinterpreting the Borderline provides a rich and complex study toward simultaneously overcoming the divide between theory and practice, philosophy and psychotherapy, and finally the borderline between suffering individuals and their concerned clinicians.

Reinventing Liberal Christianity By Theo Hobson
2013 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 0802868401 | EPUB | 1 MB
In this provocative book Theo Hobson addresses the current crisis of liberal Christianity. In past years liberal Christianity challenged centuries of authoritarian tradition and had great political influence. It played a major role in the founding of the United States and gave rise to the secular liberalism that we take for granted. But liberal Christianity today is widely dismissed as a watering-down of the faith, and more conservative forms of Christianity are increasingly dominant. Can the liberal Christian tradition recover its influence? Hobson puts forth a bold theory about why liberal Christianity collapsed and how it can be reinvented. He argues that a simple revival is not possible, because liberal Christianity consists of two traditions -- a good tradition that must be salvaged and a bad tradition that must be repudiated. Reinventing Liberal Christianity untangles these two traditions with a fascinating survey of Christian thought from the Reformation to the present and, further, aims to transform liberal Christianity through the rediscovery of faith and ritual.

Religion and Greater Ireland : Christianity and Irish Global Networks, 1750-1969 By Colin Barr; Hilary M. Carey
2015 | 471 Pages | ISBN: 0773545697 | EPUB | 1 MB
Impelled by economic deprivation at home and spiritual ambition abroad, nineteenth-century Irish clerics and laypeople reshaped the many sites where they came to pray, preach, teach, trade, and settle. So decisive was the role of religion in the worlds of Irish settlement that it helped to create a "Greater Ireland" that encompassed the entire English-speaking world and beyond. Rejecting the popular notion that the Irish were passive victims of imperial oppression, Religion and Greater Ireland demonstrates how religion opened up a vast world to exploit. The religious free market of the United States and the British Empire provided an opportunity and a level playing-field in which the Irish could compete and thrive. Contributors to this collection show how the Irish of all denominations contributed to the creation and extension of Greater Ireland through missionary and temperance societies, media, and the circulation of people, ideas, and material culture around the world. Essays also detail the diverse experiences of Irish immigrants, whether they were Catholics or Protestants, clergy or laypeople, women or men, in sites of settlement and mission including the United States, Canada, South Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland itself. Seeking to illuminate the interconnections and commonalities of the Irish migrant experience, Religion and Greater Ireland provides fascinating insight into the range of influences that Ireland's religions have had on the world beyond the British Isles.

Religious Identity and Cultural Negotiation : Toward a Theology of Christian Identity in Migration By Jenny McGill
2016 | 288 Pages | ISBN: 1498290124 | EPUB | 1 MB
Given increasing global migration and the importance of positive cross-cultural relations across national borders, this book offers an interdisciplinary and intercultural exploration of identity formation. It uniquely draws from theology, psychology, and sociology--engaging narrative and identity theories, migration and identity studies, and the theologies of identity and migration--and builds on them in an unprecedented study of international migrants to construct an initial theology of Christian identity in migration. New sociological research describes the social construction of religious, ethnic, and national identities among non-North American evangelical graduates who entered the United States to pursue advanced academic studies from 1983 to 2013. It provides an intercultural account of Christian identity formation in the context of migration, transnationalism, and globalization. It ultimately argues that an integral component of Christian identity-making involves the concept of migration, of movement, toward a transformation.

Religious Responses to Modernity by Yohanan Friedmann, Christoph Markschies
English | February 22, 2021 | ISBN: 3110723891 | 150 pages | MOBI | 0.50 Mb
The dawn of the modern age posed challenges to all of the world's religions - and since then, religions have countered with challenges to modernity. In Religious Responses to Modernity, seven leading scholars from Germany and Israel explore specific instances of the face-off between religious thought and modernity, in Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

As co-editor Christoph Markschies remarks in his Foreword, it may seem almost trivial to say that different religions, and the various currents within them, have reacted in very different ways to the "multiple modernities" described by S.N. Eisenstadt. However, things become more interesting when the comparative perspective leads us to discover surprising similarities. Disparate encounters are connected by their transnational or national perspectives, with the one side criticizing in the interest of rationality as a model of authorization, and the other presenting revelation as a critique of a depraved form of rationality. The thoughtful essays presented herein, by Simon Gerber, Johannes Zachhuber, Jonathan Garb, Rivka Feldhay, Paul Mendes-Flohr, Israel Gershoni and Christoph Schmidt, provide a counterweight to the popularity of some all-too-simplified models of modernization.

Remember Me To Lebanon : Stories of Lebanese Women in America By Evelyn Shakir
2015 | 182 Pages | ISBN: 0815608810 | PDF | 1 MB
Evelyn C. Shakir paints tales that are rich in history and background. She sets her stories in different eras, from the 1960s to the present, peopled with Lebanese women of different ages, sometimes writing letters, often reminiscing, looking back as far as the turn of the century. In different ways, these first and second-generation women struggle with feminist issues overshadowed by the demands of dual cultures. In Young Ali a teenager tries to listen to her beloved father's time-honored tales of males in friendship and marriage. Aggie of House Calls is a deceased matriarch who returns to haunt her family with reminders of the customs she fought to uphold while alive. Shakir's other heroines include a thrice-divorced thirty-year-old woman quibbling with a modern matchmaker, an elderly non-Lebanese woman who spies on Muslim neighbors in the wake of 9/11, and a traditional wife and mother who thinks she has found a route out of Old World womanly duties. Many of the authors's women grapple with reclaiming or abandoning ancestral demands, and finessing age-old male-female relationships. In Oh, Lebanon a war-haunted Lebanese-born woman willfully departs from the mores of her upbringing, with surprising results. With agile humor and emotional truth, Shakir offers multiple perspectives on Lebanese women trying to change roles in a new landscape without surrendering cultural identity.

Re:MIX : Transitioning Your Church to Living Color By Mark DeYmaz; Bob Whitesel
2016 | 83 Pages | ISBN: 1630886920 | EPUB | 1 MB
re: MIX: Transitioning Your Church to Living Color is a practical guide for pastors, denominational leaders, and lay leaders who are seeking to transition their monoethnic congregations into healthy multiethnic churches of Christ-centered faith. The book is theologically sound, cross-culturally relevant, and based on field research. It provides transferrable lessons and practices that are applicable in a variety of local church and denominational contexts. Authors Mark DeYmaz and Bob Whitesel demonstrate that such transitions are not just timely or optional. Indeed, these biblically grounded transitions are necessary for churches pursuing growth and health in an increasingly diverse society. By becoming a church of living color, existing or declining churches present a more credible witness of God's love for all people and can achieve renewed significance and sustainability. re: MIX is full of instructive, immediately useful information in a clear and easy-to-use format and includes sidebar stories from church leaders in a variety of denominations who have transitioned their congregations to living color. "Wow This is the practical tool for the church that I have been waiting for. Pentecost didn't occur until the diversity of 'every nation under heaven' was present. This book will become recommended reading for all of my seminary students." --Mike Slaughter, pastor, author, speaker, and activist

Render Unto God : Christianity and Capitalism in Crisis By Ryan C. McIlhenny
2015 | 205 Pages | ISBN: 1443877050 | PDF | 1 MB
The Great Recession, like most economic depressions, has compelled many to reconsider not only the consequences, but also the very nature of contemporary global capitalism. Sadly, very little critical reflection on the fundamental nature of the world's hegemonic economic system has come from its most devout disciples - evangelicals. Throughout the pages of the Old and New Testament, God reprimands those driven by a love for gain. By way of the cultural mandate, God has given humanity the responsibility to care not only for their fellow human beings, but also for the earth itself. True and undefiled religion includes taking care of those forgotten, marginalized, and made invisible by all-consuming (and all-mighty) capital. As such, those who accumulate wealth by destroying creation dishonor their Creator. Has the Christian community gone far enough in meeting the needs of the poor, in seeking the end of poverty, or in curbing the rapacious appetites of the greedy few in order to preserve that which is good, true, and beautiful within God's creation? Render Unto God calls Christians to reconsider their ideological commitment to unrestrained capitalism - to rethink not only the profit motive, an essential element of capitalism (if not its central telos), the meaning of private property, and the dominion of the global power elite, but also to understand how market fundamentalism fractures families, creates systems of inequality, and destroys the environment. Have we forgotten our commitment to God, neighbor, and creation? Have we forgotten our primary purpose, the reason for our existence - namely, to glorify God and enjoy him forever?

Renewing Rhetoric's Relation to Composition : Essays in Honor of Theresa Jarnagin Enos By Shane Borrowman; Stuart Brown; Thomas Miller
2009 | 385 Pages | ISBN: 0805863958 | EPUB | 1 MB
Renewing Rhetoric's Relation to Composition comprehensively examines the development of rhetoric and composition, using the writings of Theresa Jarnagin Enos as points of departure for studies of broader trends. Chapters explore such topics as the historical relations of rhetoric and composition, their evolution within programs of study, and Enos's research on gender. The volume presents the growing disjunction between rhetoric and composition and paints a compelling picture of the current state of both disciplines as well as their origins. This volume acknowledges the influential role that Theresa Enos has had in the writing and rhetoric disciplines. Her career provides benchmarks for Descriptionting developments in rhetoric and composition, including the evolving relations between the two. This collection offers a tribute to her work and to the new directions in the discipline stemming from her research. With an all-star line-up of contributors, it also represents the state of the art in rhetoric and composition scholarship, and it will serve current and future scholars in both disciplines.

Highlighting the broad spectrum of reparations available as forms of remedy for a historical injustice, the author probes the reasons behind the failure to reach a reparations agreement till the present day and discusses the significance of issues of apology, recognition and acknowledgement of responsibility. In its approach, the book departs from traditional and modern perceptions of reparations as featuring in international law, history, politics and philosophy. The analysis is focused on a comparative study of two other cases - the German-Jewish reparations agreement of 1952 and the Cypriot conflict - in search of parameters that may constitute a framework to a potential reparations model applicable to the case of Palestinian refugees. When compared to the history of negotiations over reparations in the Israeli-Palestinian case, the findings of the comparison shed light on why reparations are still illusive. The book thus offers an explanation of why reparations to Palestinian refugees have failed, and offers suggestions on how to enhance prospects for reparations to Palestinian displacement and dispossessions. A unique contribution to the study of the Arab-Israeli peace process, this book will be an important reference for scholars of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and for students and scholars of politics, conflict resolution and history.
