Einer der faszinierendsten Aspekte des Zweiten Weltkriegs war Japans Einsatz von Selbstmordpiloten, die weltweit als Kamikazes bekannt sind, obwohl die Japaner sie als Tokubetsu kōgekitai ("Spezialangriffseinheiten") bezeichneten. Übersetzt als "God Wind", "Divine Wind" und "God Spirit", versenkten die Kamikaze-Piloten bis Kriegsende 47 alliierte Schiffe und beschädigten über 300, doch der zunehmende Einsatz von Kamikaze-Angriffen war ein Zeichen für den Verlust der japanischen Luftüberlegenheit und die schwindende industrielle Macht des Landes. Diese Kampfmethode sollte sich bis zum Kampf um Iwo Jima Anfang 1945 weiter verbreiten und war besonders bei der Invasion von Okinawa im April 1945 weit verbreitet. Das "Privileg", als Kamikaze-Pilot ausgewählt zu werden, spielte direkt in die tief verwurzelte japanische Mentalität des "Todes vor der Niederlage" hinein. Das Handbuch für die Pilotenausbildung versicherte jedem Kamikaze-Kandidaten, dass die Angst vor dem Verlust des irdischen Lebens leicht zu überwinden sei, wenn sie alle Gedanken an Leben und Tod ausschalteten.
Doch nicht alle, die als Kamikazes ausgewählt wurden, waren gleich edel. Die Rekruten wurden mit Folterprogrammen oder körperlicher Züchtigung ausgebildet, und es gibt viele Berichte über geistige Beeinträchtigungen durch Drogen oder Saki. Einige wurden als "torkelnd" und benommen beschrieben, die von Wartungsoffizieren zu ihren Flugzeugen getragen und gewaltsam hineingestoßen wurden, wenn sie einen Rückzieher machten. Piloten, die ihr Ziel nicht finden konnten, wurden angewiesen, umzudrehen und ihr eigenes Leben für einen anderen Tag zu schonen; kehrte ein Pilot jedoch neunmal um, sollte er erschossen werden. Im Moment des Zusammenstoßes wurde er angewiesen, die Augen stets offen zu halten und "Hissatsu" ("klarer Tod") zu rufen.
Insgesamt starben zwischen Oktober 1944 und August 1945 fast 4.000 Kamikaze-Piloten im Kampf, und etwa jeder siebte traf sein Ziel. Auf dem Höhepunkt ihres Einsatzes fügten sie der amerikanischen Marine weitaus mehr Schaden zu als konventionelle Luftangriffe, und sie stellten zweifellos ein bedeutendes neues Hindernis für die amerikanischen Streitkräfte dar, die langsam die japanischen Heimatinseln einkesselten. Der weit verbreitete Einsatz von Kamikaze-Taktiken verdüsterte und verhärtete jedoch die Haltung des amerikanischen Militärs gegenüber Japan und trug dazu bei, die Voraussetzungen für den totalen Krieg gegen die japanische Zivilbevölkerung zu schaffen, den das amerikanische Militär in den letzten Kriegsmonaten führte. In der Marine Corps Gazette hieß es: "Die rücksichtslosen Grausamkeiten der Japaner während des gesamten Krieges hatten bei vielen Amerikanern bereits zu einem veränderten Verhalten geführt (das nach traditionellen Maßstäben als solches angesehen wurde), das in der Schändung japanischer Überreste resultierte, aber die japanische Taktik, die Bevölkerung Okinawas als menschliche Schutzschilde zu benutzen, brachte einen neuen Aspekt des Schreckens und der Qual für die psychologische Kapazität der Amerikaner mit sich." Ein Matrose an Bord der USS Miami erinnerte sich an die Kamikaze-Angriffe auf Okinawa: "Sie kamen in Schwärmen aus allen Richtungen.
