After developing the background material on complex ?ag manifolds and rep- sentationtheory, wegiveanexposition(withanumberofnewresults)ofthecomplex geometric methods that lead to our characterizations of (group theoretically de?ned) cycle spaces and to a number of consequences. Thenwegiveabriefindicationofjust how those results are related to the representation theory of semisimple Lie groups through, for example, the theory of double ?bration transforms, and we indicate the connection to the variation of Hodge structure. Finally, we work out detailed local descriptions of the relevant full Barlet cycle spaces. Cycle space theory is a basic chapter in complex analysis. Since the 1960s its importance has been underlined by its role in the geometry of ?ag domains, and by applications in the representation theory of semisimple Lie groups. This developed very slowly until a few of years ago when methods of complex geometry,

inparticular those involving Schubert slices, Schubert domains, Iwasawa domains and suppo- ing hypersurfaces, were introduced. In the late 1990s, and continuing through early 2002, we developed those methods and used them to give a precise description of cycle spaces for ?ag domains. This effectively enabled the use of double ?bration transforms in all ?ag domain situations.

Taj Mahal ist arabisch für "Krone der Paläste", und der Name könnte nicht passender sein für eines der am besten erkennbaren Gebäude der Welt. Das Taj Mahal wurde Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts innerhalb von 20 Jahren als Mausoleum für die Frau des Kaisers Shah Jahan erbautth und wird von der UNESCO, die es zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt hat, treffend als "das Juwel der muslimischen Kunst in Indien und eines der weltweit bewunderten Meisterwerke des Weltkulturerbes" beschrieben. Das Taj Mahal ist in der Tat eine globale Ikone, weil es die künstlerischen und architektonischen Elemente verschiedener Kulturen, darunter der indischen, osmanischen, persischen und islamischen Kulturen der Region, meisterhaft miteinander verbindet.
Die Marmorkuppel ist zwar das erste Merkmal, das am Taj Mahal auffällt, doch auch die sorgfältige Gestaltung des gesamten Bauwerks ist unglaublich beeindruckend, und Tausende von Arbeitern waren mehrere Jahre mit der Arbeit an den anderen Elementen beschäftigt, von den Gärten bis zu den Kalligraphien an der Außenseite. Zum Taj Mahal gehören auch andere Gebäude, darunter eine Moschee und weitere Gräber und Mausoleen für Personen, die dem Kaiser nahe standen.
Angesichts des Umfangs und der Qualität des Bauwerks ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass das Taj Mahal die Menschen auf der ganzen Welt seit Jahrhunderten fasziniert, und natürlich sind alle möglichen Mythen über das Bauwerk entstanden.
