Se se prosseguir com a história do planeta físico, a investigação seguirá as forças naturais agitadas que trouxeram os pré-humanos para o palco da evolução. Dos muitos hominídeos que lutaram pela vida num estado contínuo de agitação planetária, todos, exceto um, caíram em extinção. A espécie que sobrevive hoje cruzou-se com antepassados caídos que nos emprestaram elementos do seu código genético. Tal como uma geração se ergue sobre os ombros das que vieram antes, assim tem sido com a evolução humana, se uma espécie defeituosa tiver a sorte de sobreviver ao processo.
À medida que o registo fóssil se expande, a datação dos primeiros seres humanos é conduzida num estado de fluxo constante. Assim, os nomes de períodos mais comuns para as fases da história primitiva têm de fazer o mesmo. Uma cronologia linear do desenvolvimento humano não é possível, uma vez que a relevância tribal se move para fora e para trás em todas as direcções. Cada caminho genético requer um regresso a pontos de origem separados, e os sítios arqueológicos primários têm de separar biografias genéticas díspares retiradas do mesmo solo ou sedimento.
Um número geralmente aceite para a Idade da Pedra maior, com a primeira utilização de ferramentas de pedra, começa em 3,4 milhões de anos no início do Paleolítico. Num breve período intermédio de dois mil anos após o fim da última Idade do Gelo, o período Mesolítico serve de transição para o Neolítico, que decorre entre 8700 e 2000 a.C. Estimativas mais conservadoras situam o período da Idade da Pedra em 2,5 milhões de anos, terminando por volta de 3000 a.C. Os sistemas de datação modernos destinam-se a fornecer conclusões aproximadas no âmbito de grandes épocas, e não a apontar datas exactas, e as mudanças de opinião são constantes. Agrupadas, as fases da Idade da Pedra para a Idade da Pedra tripartida são extraídas das palavras gregas Palaios (antigo) e Lithos (pedra). A proliferação de subcategorizações foi concebida como um método para estudar os primeiros seres humanos no âmbito de um conjunto mais organizado de cronologias. Antes de estes termos entrarem em uso no século XVIII, a melhor descrição disponível do homem primitivo vinha do poeta grego Hesíodo. A sua categorização da pré-história seguia um esquema que passava pela Idade do Ouro, Idade da Prata, Idade do Bronze, Idade Heróica e Idade do Ferro. Tal arranjo é, aparentemente, mais um reflexo e uma saudação à mitologia humana reunida pelos fios de culturas emergentes e passadas.

A Place To Be Navajo is the only book-length ethnographic account of a revolutionary Indigenous self-determination movement that began in 1966 with the Rough Rock Demonstration School. Called Diné Bi'ólta', The People's School, in recognition of its status as the first American Indian community-controlled school, Rough Rock was the first to teach in the Native language and to produce a body of quality children's literature by and about Navajo people. These innovations have positioned the school as a leader in American Indian and bilingual/bicultural education and have enabled school participants to wield considerable influence on national policy. This book is a critical life history of this singular school and community.

McCarty's account grows out of 20 years of ethnographic work by the author with the Diné (Navajo) community of Rough Rock. The story is told primarily through written text, but also through the striking black-and-white images of photographer Fred Bia, a member of the Rough Rock community. Unlike most accounts of Indigenous schooling, this study involves the active participation of Navajo community members. Their oral testimony and that of other leaders in Indigenous/Navajo education frame and texture the account.
Informed by critical theories of education, this book is not just the story of a single school and community. It is also an inquiry into the larger struggle for self-determination by Indigenous and other minoritized communities, raising issues of identity, voice, and community empowerment. A Place To Be Navajo asks whether school can be a place where children learn, question, and grow in an environment that values and builds upon who they are. The author argues that the questions Rough Rock raises, and the responses they summon, implicate us all.
