Nonlinearities and Synchronization in Musical Acoustics and Music Psychology By Rolf Bader (auth.)

Nonlinearities are a crucial and founding principle in nearly all musical systems, may they be musical instruments, timbre or rhythm perception and production, or neural networks of music perception. This volume gives an overview about present and past research in these fields. In Musical Acoustics, on the one hand the nonlinearities in musical instruments often produce the musically interesting features. On the other, musical instruments are nonlinear by nature, and tone production is the result of synchronization and self-organization within the instruments. Furthermore, as nearly all musical instruments are driven by impulses an Impulse Pattern Formulation (IPF) is suggested, an iterative framework holding for all musical instruments. It appears that this framework is able to reproduce the complex and perceptionally most salient initial transients of musical instruments. In Music Psychology, nonlinearities are present in all areas of musical features, like pitch, timbre, or rhythm perception. In terms of rhythm production and motion, self-organizing models are the only ones able to explain sudden phase-transitions while tapping. Self-organizing neural nets, both of the Kohonen and the connectionist types are able to reproduce tonality, timbre similarities, or phrases. The volume also gives an overview about the signal processing tools suitable to analyze sounds in a nonlinear way, both in the Fourier-domain, like Wavelets or correlograms, and in the phase-space domain, like fractal dimensions or information structures. Furthermore, it gives an introduction to Physical Modeling of musical instruments using Finite-Element and Finite-Difference methods, to cope with the high complexity of instrument bodies and wave couplings. It appears, that most musical systems are self-organized ones, and only therefore able to produce all unexpected and interesting features of music, both in production and perception.

This book begins with the eigenvalue equation of energy and presents calculation of the energy spectrum of GaAs-AlGaAs Quantum Well using finite difference method and knowledge of potential energy profile, without using expressions for eigenfunctions, continuity of eigenfunctions, or their spatial derivatives at the two abrupt potential steps. The authors find that the results are almost the same as those obtained by solving numerically using regula falsi method, and transcendental equations that are obeyed by the energy levels, where the transcendental equations are obtained by requiring continuity of eigenfunctions and of their spatial derivatives at the two potential steps. Thus, this book confirms that it is possible to numerically calculate the energy spectrum of Quantum Well by the finite difference method when it is not correct or when it is not possible to use continuity of eigenfunctions and their spatial derivatives at the two abrupt potential steps. The authors also showthat it is possible to use the finite difference method in cases where the potential steps are non-abrupt. The book demonstrates this by calculating the energy spectrum of isolated parabolic Quantum Well of finite depth using finite difference method.

Far from being a homogenous phenomenon that romanticizes the totalitarian state, the ostalgie genre is multifaceted, reflexive, and at times subversive. Thus, Astafeva argues, the core of "ostalgie" is an experience of distance that is 'prefocused' by various aesthetic strategies. This genre-based definition makes it possible to conceptualize the phenomenon of ostalgie film in its heterogeneity and to reveal the mechanisms that lay in the essence of ostalgic experience. The cognitivist-phenomenological approach is underpinned by historiographic and genre theory and close analysis of film examples―from the most popular ostalgie films such as Goodbye, Lenin! (Wolfgang Becker, 2003) to lesser-known film productions and recent series such as Kleo (2022-2024)―that allow exploration of various functions of the ostalgic experience. Ostalgie films can foster uncritical reactionary and conservative views of history and expose the experience of distance by orienting aesthetics toward kitsch and retro. They can also encourage reflexive and meta-reflexive understandings of history so that the GDR past is critically discussed and reworked. Furthermore, ostalgie films can in some cases activate historical consciousness, facilitate the production of historical knowledge, and generate ethical thinking and empathy.
