Communist strength in rural Vietnam society - the Vietminh represented a nation in arms - was backed by supplies from Communist China and the Soviet Union. It was an existential struggle on the French side - the end of cafe society, and the gravy train for planters, officials, the military, and politicians. Military matters including General Giap's strategy and tactics are analysed in detail,l but it was a 'soldiers' war', told at ground-level, and readers will feel the heat and fear of battle, be shocked at war crimes, and intrigued by the tales of Graham Greene et al. The global importance was not lost on the powers following exhaustion from world war and in the shadow of the Cold War. All great leaders were involved, Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Churchill, Stalin, Khruschev, Chou En-Lai and Mao Zedong, Under the shadow of the A bomb, a negotiated peace and first detent of the Cold War would end in the sumptuous salons of Geneva.

Ever since Godwin announced to the world in Memoirs that Wollstonecraft had had little use for religion, most biographers, scholars, historians and readers have regarded her as an apostate. Further, the existing scholarly texts fail to demonstrate the pervasiveness of biblical references in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. The true tally of scriptural references approaches over 1,100 as identified in this study. Wollstonecraft's biblical allusions, besides sheer volume, are noteworthy because they gave women a biblical basis upon which to contend for better education and occupational opportunities as well as for legal and political independence. That the arguments were couched in biblical rhetoric most likely contributed to their initial reception and tolerance of what were incendiary ideas and searing social criticism. The recognition and analysis of biblical underpinnings in Wollstonecraft and Religion not only of Rights of Woman but also of her other publications and letters propose new consideration regarding the Mother of Feminism and her work. The chapters that accompany the annotated text of Rights of Woman furnish biographical and historical context that offer fresh perspectives about Wollstonecraft's religious convictions and faith, many of which have not been published elsewhere.

This book details the perspectives of women of African ancestry who witnessed a twentieth-century uprising in St. Kitts. They chronicle the story of how they and other women of African descent navigated the slavery afterlife on an island dominated by sugar plantations, institutions, and laws that reinforced enslavement 100 years after the Act to Abolish Slavery had been passed. The stories highlight the women's political consciousness, leadership and participation in the protracted liberation struggle to reclaim their humanity, and collaterally decenter the colonized version of the event that has dominated accounts of the historical moment. They reveal the agility of the strategies women utilized including religious rituals, arson, a network of children to communicate messages within and between villages, on occasion taking the frontlines of the protest, providing sanctuaries for protestors, and serving expertly as character witnesses and alibis in court trials of persons who were charged as rioters. Their first language - an oral, ancestral proto-language, yet unnamed, and facing extinction - is incorporated into the history to honour their memory. Their remarkable memories reveal a noticeable shift in understanding of the uprising, and the dynamics of the defining moment in Caribbean history. The book encourages us to think critically about the subjects of history and who tells the story.

World and Hour in Roman Minds: Exploratory Essays seeks to penetrate Romans' consciousness of space and time, aspects of antiquity currently attracting intense interest. Historian Richard Talbert presents here a cohesive selection of nineteen essays, published over the course of thirty years, all but one previously appearing in widely scattered publications. Now reinforced by an Introduction and textually and visually updated, these essays document the progress of pioneering efforts to glimpse the worldviews of Romans up and down the social scale-even Julius Caesar and Claudius-and to reassess the communicative role of Roman mapping along with its strengths and limitations.
Talbert interprets the Antonine Itinerary and Artemidorus and Peutinger maps afresh, visualizing the latter with a wider perspective than in previous scholarship and probing the challenges of its design, production and copying. He also casts doubt, however, on the idea that Romans conceptualized their long-distance roads as an interconnected system, as did certain comparable premodern states across the Americas and Asia.
The most recent essays share findings that emerge with a shift of focus from space to time, specifically Romans' daily timekeeping by hours-another neglected dimension of their social mentalité. Talbert suggests that Romans' tracking of time should be regarded as uncannily similar to that of the Japanese before Westernization. Throughout, the essays are unified by the methods applied. The value of broader, often comparative, approaches is demonstrated, as well as the creative potential of untapped testimony and digital technology-altogether an invaluable platform to stimulate further inquiry.
