The Green Howards in the Great War
by John Sheen;

English | 2024 | ISBN: 1399080946 | 498 pages | True PDF EPUB | 117.76 MB

In answer to Lord Kitchener's appeal, in late August and September 1914 many men joined Alexandra's Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment, better known as The Green Howards. Recruits came from around the Middlesbrough area and the ironstone mines on the North Yorkshire moors, while others came from the East Durham coalfield and the Durham City area.
The 8th and 9th Battalions left the Regimental Depot in Richmond in late September and moved to Frensham on the Hampshire/Surrey border, where they trained hard until bad weather forced a move to barracks in Aldershot.
They arrived on the Somme front at the end of June 1916, but were not involved in the fighting until 5 July, when the 9th Battalion captured Horseshoe trench and Lieutenant Donald Simpson Bell won the VC when he destroyed a German machine gun position. On 10 July both battalions took part in the capture of Contalmaison, a village that had been a first day objective. A second VC was awarded posthumously to Private William Short of the 8th Battalion during the fighting in Munster Alley in August 1916.
The next year found the 23rd Division in the Ypres Salient, where they were in and out of the line until June 1917 when they took part in the Battle of Messines and the 8th Battalion had the honour of taking Hill 60.
In November 1917 the division was sent to Italy to bolster the hard-pressed Italian Army, but the 9th Battalion returned to France in 1918 where they fought until the Armistice. The 8th Battalion stayed on in Italy and fought at the crossing of the Piave and Vittorio Veneto, which brought the war to an end in Italy.

The Heliosphere in the Local Interstellar Medium: Proceedings of the First ISSI Workshop 6-10 November 1995, Bern, Switzerland By Sir H. Bondi (auth.), R. Von Steiger, R. Lallement, M. A. Lee (eds.)
1996 | 399 Pages | ISBN: 9401072965 | PDF | 17 MB
In summary, we can conclude that the contributions of the different ionization processes to the total ionization rate for the most abundant interstellar species are basically known. The ionization of the noble gases He and Ne is almost completely dominated by photoionization, whereas for H charge-exchange with the solar wind is most important. For other species, such as 0 and Ar, both processes contribute significantly. Electron impact ionization can typically contribute by '" 10% to the total rate in the inner Solar System. Because direct measurements of the solar EUV flux are not yet continuously available, the variation of the ionization rate over the solar cycle still contains a relatively large uncertainty. The recent measurements of pickup ion distributions and of the neutral helium gas provide an independent tool to determine the total ionization rate that can be used to cross calibrate with the results obtained for the individual ionization processes. Acknowledgements The authors are grateful to M. Allen for supplying us with new data on photoioniza tion cross-sections compiled by him. We thank also M. Gruntman for drawing our attention to and support in collecting the most recent data on charge-exchange cross-sections. D. The Hidden Victims: Civilian Casualties of the Two World Wars
by Cormac Ó Gráda
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0691258759 | 521 Pages | PDF | 41 MB

A staggering new account of the civilian death toll of the world wars-and what it reveals about the true nature and cost of modern war
Soldiers have never been the only casualties of wars. But the armies that fought World Wars I and II killed far more civilians than soldiers as they countenanced or deliberately inflicted civilian deaths on a mass scale. By one reputable estimate, 9.7 million civilians and 9 million combatants died in World War I, while World War II killed 25.5 million civilians and 15 million combatants. But in The Hidden Victims, Cormac Ó Gráda argues that even these shocking numbers are almost certainly too low. Carefully evaluating all the evidence available, he estimates that the wars cost not 35 million but some 65 million civilian lives-nearly two-thirds of the 100 million total killed. Indeed, he shows that war-induced famines alone may have killed 30 million people, making them the single largest cause of death.
The Hidden Victims is the first book to attempt to measure and describe the full scale of civilian deaths during the world wars, from all causes, including genocide, starvation, aerial bombardment, and disease. While nations went to great lengths to record military casualties, they often didn't count or deliberately obscured civilian deaths. Getting the numbers right is important. It reveals much about the true human costs of the wars, the nature of modern warfare, and the failure of efforts to stop civilian casualties. It also makes it possible to argue with those who try to deny, minimize, or exaggerate wartime savagery.

The Historical Landscape of Ancient Kalabría: Balkan and Aegean Linguistic Influences
by Francesco Lopez
English | 2025 | ISBN: 9004547762 | 207 Pages | PDF | 17.5 MB

This book focuses on Kalabría as an ancient land of Italy from its origin to the early Middle Ages. The place name referred to the Salento peninsula, also called Messapia, as part of present-day Puglia and later to the land of the Bruttii, now the region of Calabria. This work is the first to carefully evaluate linguistic and historical studies in a comprehensive and monographic form. Following an interdisciplinary approach, the systematic combination of Linguistics and Landscape History guides the research step by step. The sample represents a new significant methodological instance that merges Toponymy, History, Archaeology, Topography, and Philology.

Ian Nish, "The History of Manchuria, 1840-1948: A Sino-Russo-Japanese Triangle "
English | ISBN: 1898823421 | 2016 | 736 pages | PDF | 15 MB
In A History of Manchuria, Ian Nish describes the turbulent times which the three Northeastern Provinces of China experienced in the last two centuries. The site of three serious wars in 1894, 1904 and 1919, the territory rarely enjoyed peace though its economy progressed because of the building of arterial railways. From 1932 it came under the rule of the Japanese-inspired government of Manchukuo based at Changchun. But that was short-lived, being brought to an end by the punitive incursion and occupation of the country by Soviet forces in 1945. Thereafter the devastated territory was fought over by Chinese Nationalist and Communist armies until Mukden (Shenyang) fell to the Communists in October 1948. Manchuria, under-populated but strategically important, was the location for disputes between China, Russia and Japan, the three powers making up the 'triangle' which gives the name to the sub-title of this study. These countries were hardly ever at peace with one another, the result being that the economic growth of a potentially wealthy country was seriously retarded. The story is illustrated by extracts drawn from contemporary documents of the three triangular powers.

Martin Roach, "The History of Speed: The Quest to Go Faster, From the Dawn of the Motor Car to the Speed of Sound"
English | 2021 | pages: 256 | ISBN: 0228103541 | EPUB | 59,6 mb
Ever since we built machines that could transport us, there has been a desire to find ways to make them go faster. For some, going faster isn't enough - they want to be the fastest. This book celebrates those who have built the machines and driven them at ever greater speeds. This is The History of Speed.

Bestselling automotive writer Martin Roach (The Science of Supercars) tells the extraordinary story of those who have come to be obsessed by speed. From Camille Jenatzy, 'the Red Devil', who became the first man to drive at over 100 kmh in 1899, through the golden age of Malcolm Campbell and his Bluebird, and on to the modern era of jet- and rocket-propelled cars, we have gone faster and faster. But this book is not just about these record-breakers, Roach also looks at the technology, the engines and the inventors who helped progress in speed at all levels, from Formula One to the supercars from the likes of Ferrari and Mercedes that are eagerly snapped up by collectors, rarely to be seen on the road.
Accompanied by some of the most stunning images of the cars and those who made and drove them (including pioneering women drivers), Roach tells a wonderful story of innovation and invention. He talks to some of the great drivers to find out what inspires them to risk their lives, and finds out from engineers how they developed their ideas. Along the way, we hear some remarkable tales and anecdotes, but also find out how the pursuit of speed can also have its costs, with many tragic heroes and heroines falling along the way.
Filled with hundreds of color and black-and-white period photographs, this will please antique car enthusiasts as well as racing and speed fans of all ages.

Dennis Cooley, "The Home Place: Essays on Robert Kroetsch's Poetry"
English | ISBN: 1772121193 | 2016 | 376 pages | PDF | 18 MB
"He wants to sit and visit at the kitchen table, and he can hardly wait to get on the road again." ―From Chapter 1

Robert Kroetsch, one of Canada's most important writers, was a fierce regionalist with a porous yet resilient sense of "home." Although his criticism and fiction have received extensive attention, his poetry remains underexplored. This exuberantly polyvocal text, insightfully written by dennis cooley―who knew Kroetsch and worked with him for decades―seeks to correct that imbalance. The Home Place offers a dazzling, playful, and intellectually complex conversation drawing together personal recollections, Kroetsch's archival materials, and the international body of Kroetsch scholarship. For literary scholars and anyone who appreciates Canadian literature, The Home Place will represent the standard critical evaluation of Kroetsch's poetry for years to come.

The Indian Rebellion, 1857-1859: A Military History in the Global Context
by Roy, Kaushik

English | 2025 | ISBN: 1032380594 | 309 pages | True PDF EPUB | 18.5 MB

The Indian Rebellion, 1857-1859: A Military History in the Global Context focuses on the military dimension of this conflict, in which Indian rebels waged both conventional and unconventional warfare against the British. In the summer of 1857, British rule almost disintegrated in north India due to the rebellion of the Indians in the Bengal Army. The military mutiny was followed by large-scale peasant uprising. But by mid-1859, the Indian Rebellion collapsed with the military defeat of the rebels. This book is the first one based on archival sources, from both India and the United Kingdom, dealing with the military history of the mid-nineteenth-century Indian Rebellion. The volume wrestles with the questions of why and how the British won, ipso facto, and why and how the rebels lost. The book also situates the military experience of the mid-nineteenth century Indian subcontinent within a global context. Besides traditional themes like strategy, tactics, technology, command, and logistics, the topics introduced by 'new' military history, such as experiences of war, impact on society and the construction of identities, are addressed throughout. The Indian Rebellion, 1857-1859 is essential for students and researchers of military history, modern Indian history, and British Imperial history.
