Jahrhunderts. Beginnend mit einem Überblick über den Stand der akustischen Forschungen um 1750, bespricht das Buch neben der Biographie Chladnis vor allem seine wissenschaftliche Arbeiten und ihre epochale Wirkung, die bis zum Auftreten von Helmholtz dauerte. Dieses Buch ist die erste Beschreibung der Akustikgeschichte für den entscheidenden Zeitraum zwischen 1750 und 1860 und schliesst damit eine Lücke. Es dokumentiert in überzeugender Weise, was aus der Zusammenarbeit von Physikern, Mathematikern, Musikern, Musikinstrumentenbauern und auch Architekten im betrachteten Zeitraum entstanden ist.

In 212 CE, the emperor Caracalla extended citizenship to nearly all free-born residents of the Roman Empire. In doing so, he transformed not only his own, but the very ideal of empire and statehood in Europe. This volume first inquires into the contexts of Caracalla's act in his own day. Rome was an ancient empire: it had traditionally ruled over populations that were conceived and governed as distinct units, a practice that was both strategic and ideological. What were the practical and political effects of a universalizing ideology in this context? Was there a reorientation of private social and legal practice in response? And what politics of exclusion came to apply, now that citizenship no longer served to distinguish persons of higher and lower status? The volume subsequently traces the history of citizenship in universalizing ideologies and legal practice from late antiquity to the codification of law in Europe in the nineteenth century. Caracalla's act was then repeatedly cited as the ideal toward which sovereign polities should strive, be they states or empires. Citizenship and law were thereby made preeminent among the universalisms of European statecraft.

This volume is an outgrowth of the 1995 Summer School on Theoretical Physics of the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP), held in Banff, Alberta, in the Canadian Rockies, from July 30 to August 12,1995. Most lecturers gave three or four fifty-minute lectures aimed at relative novices in the field. Of course, new and exciting results are presented in applications of Clifford algebras, but in a coherent and user-friendly way to the nonspecialist. The subject area of the volume is Clifford algebra and its applications. Through the geometric language of the Clifford-algebra approach, many concepts in physics are clarified, united, and extended in new and sometimes surprising directions. In particular, the approach eliminates the formal gaps that traditionally separate clas sical, quantum, and relativistic physics. It thereby makes the study of physics more efficient and the research more penetrating, and it suggests resolutions to a major physics problem of the twentieth century, namely how to unite quantum theory and gravity. The term "geometric algebra" was used by Clifford himself, and David Hestenes has suggested its use in order to emphasize its wide applicability, and b& cause the developments by Clifford were themselves based heavily on previous work by Grassmann, Hamilton, Rodrigues, Gauss, and others.

Hench June Wilson OBJECTIVE Millions of people presently enjoy an improved quality of life due to prostheses which repair, augment or replace parts of their skeletal system: bones, joints, teeth, etc. However, all replacement parts have a finite probability of survival. The goal of this book is to compare the survivability data for various skeletal prosthesis systems. All data derive from previously published clinical studies. Where possible statistical comparisons are made and the reasons for failure are discussed. THE NEED FOR SKELETAL PROSTHESES We are an aging population with more than 100 million people in the U. S. and Europe over the age of 50 years. An unfortunate consequence of aging is a progressive deterioration of the quality of skeletal tissues. From the age of 30 years there is a decrease in bone mass for both men and women (Fig. 1. 1). However, for women it is much greater and between 40 and 60 years of age the rate of deterioration of long bones and vertebrae of women is especially severe due to hormonal changes. By the age of 70 most women will have lost from 35 to 60% of their bone mass. The loss of volume of cancellous or trabecular bone leads to a large decrease in mechanical compressive strength (Fig. 1. 2). The clinical consequence is an increasing incidence of vertebral collapse. Cortical bone decreases in tensile strength with age (Fig. 1.

A vocal supporter of using cricket to apply pressure to the South African apartheid regime, in 1992 he became chairman of the International Cricket Council - the first Black man in that influential role.
Shining a light on Walcott's largely ignored part in effecting change through the vehicle of cricket, this book also shows how he contributed to dramatic social transformation in Guyana as cricket and social organiser for the country's sugar estates from 1954 to 1970, bringing about improvements in the living conditions and self-esteem of plantation workers while promoting the emergence of several world-class cricketers from a previously neglected corner of the Caribbean.
